Dark Horizons: Mechanized Corps

Dark Horizons: Mechanized Corps

First (cockpit) vs Third person view
Hello,

According to videos (i didn't play yet), the game supports both view, and is mostly played from an outside view, not so much from cockpit view.

How is it ? How is it supposed to be played ? Do i have a strong disaventage if i play only from cockpit view ? Can i disable outside view in a multiplayer server's options ? Can i know if my target is in or out (in Mechwarrior Online, there is a little drone flying over head when you use outside camera, i think it's clever) ?

Mostly i'm looking more for a "mech sim", less for an "shooter". I like slow, heavy, big stomping mechs, and i don't like when mechs have almost human behavior (Hawken was awesome in its design, but waste its gameplay, in my opinion, because of a way too fast pace).

Our game is definately much more of a Mech Sim. Currently there isn't a way to force players into cokcpit mode, and no way to tell if they are in or out. MWO method of the drone is definately an interesting concept to explain the ability to do 3rd person and is something to consider.

For me, the difficulty in cockpit mode is field of view. Obviously your FOV in 3rd person is greater. In particular, seeing things at the Mech's feet is difficult and can cause problems getting hung on things if you are not paying attention. Generally in any game, I find targetting to be easier in first person mode though, but maybe that's a personal preference or easier for just me.

For a small indie dev we want to make the game as accessible as possible to different preferences, but are definately open to ideas to bridge the gap as far as one style having an advantage of another.
I'm so used to 3rd person view that it would probably drive me insane to play in cockpit view. I still think the mechs are big and clunky in the game either way, I just don't like not knowing where my feet are.

Could be good to have different HUD informations.

- If you are inside, you have all informations : radar, positions, weapon groups, damage dummy, speed...

- If you are outside, you have a better view (larger FOV, can see your feet etc), but you can't see the radar, you don't need to see your torso/legs position, you may have a less accurate damage dummy (only a general overview maybe, not part by part), and you keep control over weapon groups just like from inside.

Also, what about an antenna reaching out when you go outside, making you more visible on radars (maybe 25% range malus).

I feel this in/out camera view could and should be a full feature with gameplay elements involved.
