I like Tower of Guns. I like it when I'm mobile and running around with some dumb weapon, and I find myself really enjoying what's become of my weapon. It's fun to jump three times while shooting explosive sawblades. What's not fun is when you get hit by something, and you have to swing your camera around to find whatever it was that hit you. When something is hitting you, it's usually either right in front of you, but the few times it isn't are extremely frustrating. Clarity is something this game could use in general.
The biggest issue I have with this game is how hard it is to see what you want. Visually the game isn't stunning, but the UI in particular is something I find difficult to read. The meters are alright, but I can't tell what the rate they're increasing or decreasing. I find the fact that sometimes you're just going to get hit annoying when taking damage lowers how strong your weapon is annoying to say the least. The game is frequently a bullet hell, and when I look back on a run, a lot of rooms have one or two areas where it feels like you're guranteed to get hit. But a key phrase of that last sentence was, "when I look back on a run," because I'm generally not thinking about it until I'm dead.
I would describe ToG as, "Shoot first, and ask questions later," because the few times I could think were when I was staring at the post death recap screen. It's a game that feels as though it is trying to make a joke, but it never tells a punchline. It tries to be cutesy with the jokes on the loading screens, and the little dialogue stories, but the jokes get lost when the game itself is about running-shooting-mid-air-dodging-blasting and you're supposedly some rat or niece. It's weird that it tries to make a joke about how little story there is, because it's not a funny joke.
I like the implications of the splash screen. I like the idea of a post-apocalypse, or a doom fortress, or whatever it could be. Despite their set-up and aethetic, I never get the feeling that Tower of Guns is satisfied with iteslf. That's not to say it's perfect, but it feels like the energy is mis-spent tyring to make fun of a story, and just be a fun game all the time. The design seems to be trying to sell itself as almost emotionless action, and yet they keep trying to push a wacky side on us. Yes, the game is wacky, but the game is Wacky Action, which isn't to say it's comedic Action.
