Hexcells is one of the best puzzle game experiences I've had.
It starts off with a simple Minesweeper-like premise. After a few levels, the game begins its brilliance by adding new types of clues beyond "three of the surrounding hexes are empty," turning the game into something resembling a nonogram-like puzzle (the kind of puzzle featured in Nintendo's Picross games). These mechanics are backed up by excellent puzzle design and an ambient soundtrack that keeps players relaxed and focused as they work their way through the puzzles.
The only serious flaw in the game is that there isn't any replay value. There is still quite a bit of skill in repeating the large puzzles without making a mistake, but gradually players will remember the patterns and can cheat by learning from previous mistakes. Smaller puzzles also suffer as they can become simple exercises in trial and error.
Yet that flaw is a minor complaint. Anyone who enjoys logic-based puzzles should give this one a go. After finishing it, check out Hexcells Plus for an even greater challenge or Hexcells Infinite for an endless amount of content.
