Both games are in early alpha. Aside from a sci-fi setting and sandbox elements like mining and crafting, both games are heading in different directions.

Signs of Life is aiming for more Metroidvania than Minecraft. The focus is on hand crafted areas, puzzles, and encounters. The block based mining and crafting systems are just a few of the tools used in creating experiences and facilitating those focuses. Signs of Life will have a story that can be completed to finish. The characters and bosses within the game are carefully planned components of that story. The combat will be more kinetic and focused. Enemies are unique with their own routines and special attacks. Weapons and tools are also hand crafted unique items, and not the result of a random number generator. Multiplayer will be a co-operative experience.

Starbound is Starbound. You'd be better off going to the starbound forums and asking for impressions.

There are like 10 threads exactly like yours.
How hard is it to do a little search?

I am really hoping Starbound will become something awesome in the end. But, at this point, it almost feels like the Starbound devs aren't sure what they want to do.

Think about this. Starbound has that hefty banking penalty that's supposed to "add challenge" but it really just adds annoyance. Plus, it hardly becomes noticable once you get the refinary where you can make real money, anyway. So, you wonder why it's even in the game.

Starbound has hunger. Eat or die. Signs of Life doesn't have hunger, but keeping your belly full of food is so helpful you'll want to keep it that way. See the difference?

Starbound currently rules it's game by restrictions and penalties (if their devs learn anything then that may change). On the other hand, Signs of Life tries to make things interesting or rewarding like the way it handles food.

One big difference is in Signs Of Life is that when you die you drop all your stuff. I usually don't care for such a style, but I don't have much of a problem with it. Enemies in the game are not just all over the place/in your face. At least not at first. It actually does what it intends. It adds an element of danger. But, some people might still not like it. I think it deserves a chance.

Bottom Line: At this point in time, Signs Of Life is the better game by a huge margin. If Chucklefish do the right things, though, Starbound could catch up.

These two games are totally different. Well, they are the same in the respect that they're both 2D-Terraria-like games.

For me, I prefer Signs of Life over Starbound. The reason is, is because the atmosphere in SoL is just a better feeling and makes me feel like I am trying to survive. Whereas in Starbound, it's more of a game to explore silly sights and silly aliens. The guns in SoL are also fanominal and it's a very fun game. I mean, currently SoL is half as much as Starbound and you get the same amount of content in both somewhat.

I don't think I could've said it better!

Coop is planned, but when we'll get it is unknown.

Signs of Life = Something an adult made.

Starbound = a 2 year olds plaything.

and that pretty much sums it up,
Necrius 30 Jan, 2014 @ 10:02am
Signs of life is prettier, Starbound is random-er.

Do you even own Starbound? You sound like a fanboy. Both games are good, but to say that one of them is bad is bs and you know it. They may be different games, but they're all terraria clones whether you like it or not. Your steam level also doesn't say much

Right lets play your game then.
Do you even own SoL? No.
Going by steam, lvl, you are well advanced...having so many games, half not even touched, a quarter under 2 hours and the rest...
Skyrim that boring? That you have to come to a forum of a game you dont even own to bring in your opinion which is as valid as for example, mine?
Oh wait, i own the game and have ingame experience AND i own SB and have ingame experience.
So whatever you say, you wont win. I wonder who, besides me, is the fanboy here.
