I really wanted to love this game. I've followed the series and played them all. Fond memories from my youth and all that. But this game was just... painful.
My biggest complaint is pacing. It is slow. Painfully slow. Every single sequence takes SO long to complete because of the ridiculously slow movement speed (seriously, guys, a jog won't kill you) and the stilted, meandering dialogue.
The puzzles lack any of the clever ingenuity of the early games. In this game they're reduced to lucky combinations of items, or downright nonsensical logic. It's no surprise they incorporated a hint system, because so many of the puzzles make zero sense.
There are many more issues, visibility of important puzzle components, janky mechanics, a frustrating inventory system, poor dialogue, but I think the biggest is just, the lack of a strong plot.
The whole thing is poorly written, and totally cliche, downright stealing elements from earlier games and just rehashing them.
Despite my love for the series, I can't recommend this game. It's janky, slow, poorly developed, and lacks the charm that really helps you put up with the bad. The plot isn't compelling, and there's really no incentive to see it through.
