Building your first tavern
Hey I just bought the game and was going through the tutorial and it took me a little while to figure out how to build my first building, the tavern for the quest "Where everybody knows your name". The part beforehand just has you repair what was in bits and pieces before you arrived and never showed you how to actually build a fresh new building. Just leaving a suggestion to throw an arrow in there or something to point new players in the right direction!

Thanks for getting the game! :-)

Hmm, there should be a tutorial for building that tavern... sounds like it's broken right now. I'll add that to our bug list.

I'm glad I did! I hope I can help with anything else I run into while I am playing :)

Almost a year later and this still isn't fixed. Just tried to play this again
thinking it might be better now...I got 2 quests, build a tavern and some other
building. How? There is no icon you can click that has anything to do
with building anything. I flew to some other town after I acidentally
discovered the travel icon actually works. When I got there there was a marketplace
of buildings. Oh good now I guess I buy a blue print or something. Nope,
all I can buy is apples, oranges, copper ore and wood etc. So I bought some
wodd and some ore thinking maybe if I returned to the starting island it might
now have a way to build something. Nope. Nada,nothing,zip....I like the artwork
and if there was some kind of functionality to the game I would play it.
As it is it's a gigantic WTF?
Surely, I just overlooked something...dunno

Hmm, I thought we fixed this... but we have been tweaking the tutorials around. It's possible it's broken again? You can build stuff by clicking on the Shop button in the lower left of the screen.

Oh btw, if it's been a while since you've played, you might want to reset your character (can do that from the main menu). We've been adding more stuff to the tutorials as we've added features, but an old character might not be able to see all of it.

Ok. I'll reset myself. That works in real life sometimes so why shouldn't
it work in a game? Thanks.

Nope. Didn't work out. I did get the tavern to show up and I was able
to get the screen to give a task to Mabel but she blew town, didn't
show up for work. The tavern isn't making any money and the game is unplayable.
Maybe I clicked the wrong thing on Mabel? If so , since it's a tutorial, it
probably should've corrected me. I don't want the game to play
itself but I don't want to have to start from square one every time
I make a bad click. Thanks anyways.

Hmm, after you talk to her, she should be a follower you can assign tasks to in the tavern. The tavern doesn't make gold automatically. You'll need to select the tavern and assign one of your followers a task to operate the tavern. Here's a brief video showing it: https://streamable.com/xi13

I have a related problem. I got as far as construction the engineering building, but now I'm stuck on "Placement". I've put the building where I want it, but there's no way (that I can see) to build it. The 4 buttons that were in the middle of the screen that I used to build the tavern have disappeared. The only button on the screen is one on the far right edge about 2/3 of the way down that, when clicked, shows/hides all the other buildings. I've pressed all the keys I thought were relevant (enter, escape, space bar, delete) and then I tried all the other keys as well (pretty much just mashed my hands all over they keyboard hoping something would happen) and nothing worked.

We've seen a bug going around lately where part of the placement UI vanishes. To fix this temporarily, try restarting the game. If that doesn't fix it, changing the game's aspect ratio to 16:9 might help. We're hoping to have the issue fixed in the next patch.

That's what I finally did -- I was afraid I'd have to start from the beginning, but fortunately it had autosaved right before I started placing the building. I think the problem initially occured when I clicked the left-most of the four building placement buttons. (not sure what that button's for... the second time around I avoided it entirely)

What would help this game a LOT is some text descriptions that popup when you hover the mouse over a button. The buttons are all pictures, and while I know what a red X and a green Check mean, I'm having to learn the rest by trial and error.
