I tried to play this game years ago and abandoned it after a short time due to the amount of bugs rendering it unplayable. After rediscovering the game a far corner of my steam library, I decided to give it another go.
Io and behold! By now, a very active community of enthusiasts has fixed 99% of these problems with their unofficial patches. And the game is an absolute gem. Brilliant writing, memorable characters, dialogues and settings. I Recommend it wholeheartedly. Where else can you play a batshit crazy vampire who ventures to have a conversation with a stop sign?
While the story is quite linear, it provides reason to replay it because the different clans of vampires provide very unique game experiences: Some, like Toreador and Ventrue, will be able to talk themselves out of most situations. The Nosferatu look like the monsters they are and will cause a panic the moment a mortal sees them, which leads to a focus on sneaking and exploring the sewers of the city. The Brujah are combat experts, inviting a hack'n'slash melee-fest. Others, like the Tremere, focus on magic.
And then there's the Malkavians, a strand of vampires who's very blood causes insanity, leading to some of the craziest dialogues in video game history. They can (temporarily?) cause insanity in others - who wouldn't want to make their annoying ex think you're their long lost pet turtle? It also allows them a near prophetic insight into their conversation partners' thoughts and motives - That is, if you listen to the right voices n your head and ignore the others...
