Tips for a noob like me?

I loved Wasteland 2 so I had been trying to get into Wasteland 1, but I'm having a ton of issues doing so. I used the default characters and most combat encounters after a while had my party at 1 hp going unconcious over and over and then eventually dying. I know how to use my skills on things like picklocking a door or bashing it open with a sledgehammer instead, but I really don't know what I should be doing anyway. :S

That's odd. Steam is a weird one sometimes. That's why I'm moving to GOG.
