1980's reviisited
Thanks WL-1 folks for the classic 8+?-bit game memory resurfacing. I noticed NEC had built a newer console interface for some of their "small sized graphic" classics. Thanks again! It is better on
Steam, than taking the time to dust off the 1980-era cartridges, (helps to be from back then, in-order to remember game-carts, if not, at least have seen / read about them someplace) - Recalling now those years-ago -- game hours, in the form of flasbacks, (joking about the flashbacks) - (another history word / phrase lookup)... once again... (:-)... Later...

A title this old should be given away as freeware. Wait, it is on abadonware. Yet they want to charge for this?

Yeah, what they did was pretty awesome. New portraits, music and dialog speech made it enjoyable for me.

It is being given away for free, to everyone who bought Wasteland 2 Digital Deluxe. Abandonia redirects you to a place to purchase Wasteland 1.

There is no such thing as abandonware. It really depends on if someone wants bother enforcing copyright.

They can charge for it because they own the rights... it is not freeware. Maybe at some point it was but that is no longer the case. Any 'free' copies are pirate copies.

@๖ۣۜRevolucas: I disagree. Abadonware exists... it is exactly what you said, a case of no longer being under any form of copyright. It has been abandoned and therefore copyright laws no longer apply. It is free for all until claimed. I guess the messed up thing is sometimes companies can come into possesion of older titles they didn't originally own, and charge money for them... but if you choose to steal it you are still breaking the law and they don't exactly slap AAA prices on them so it should be win/win.

I've got a freeware copy of Darksun:shattered lands. Sure, I could hunt an official copy... but would end up paying more than its worth to some random guy, and paying more than I would if some random company just obtained the rights an decided to claim a fish & chips and a drink for it (if that). I also did have a freeware copy of WL1, until it was offically re-released.

To clarify, If someone owns the rights and is claiming the rights then it is not freeware/abadonware. If not, knock yourself out (as ๖ۣۜRevolucas pointed out, freeware/abandonware sites will now link to pages to buy copies -usually GoG - if the game is available for sale/under ownership).

*sigh* I guess this could go back and forth a fair bit. But if you cant officially buy it, then its technically free. Sure, I bet there are some technical legal blah blah that says it shouldnt be free but due to copyright laws and how they work it is until someone claims it (and that can end up being anyone). And until they do, who the ♥♥♥♥ is gonna sue me over downloading it for free? Noone, noone technically owns it , noones claimed it yet (but as said above WL1 is owned and claimed by the original owner).

Just to prove my above point: trying to find copies of darksun... prices range from £20 or more to a 5r. The one for a 5r on ebay has no description and a copy/paste image of the cover from google. Chances are that is just a fake copy (abandonware burnt to disk)... too risky, ill just download it for free until it is re-released.

just to add: that transaction for the 'bootleg' would be far more illegal than downloading it via abandonia etc due to someone charging money for a copy of a game they don't own (if bootlegged it woudnt even be a secondhand copy). You wouldn't be in the 'wrong', nor get in trouble yourself, but that transaction would be illegal. Freeware sites don't charge money for the product so are not doing anything agaisnt the law.
