awsome. but it has its things.

combat is hands off. you script orders and turns happen at the same time.

the UI is bad. ive seen much worse but its certainly not a top end UI.

graphics are bad.

game choice is far beyond what most people will comprehend. a good point here was made about buffs/nerfs (which come in slow cycles) being almost unnoticable to the majority as you dont have time to try it all.

choice is huge in terms of units. of course its still boiled to the basics. mage/commander and archers/melle/mounted/elites(national troops). but the differaences. 2 nations with giants play very very different games. which melle units are more skirmish vs conscript vs heavy are insaling different.

This game has incredible depth. There so many options with spells, units and magic items it's staggering. This also has a downside, it has quite the learning curve. But once you overcome it you see that this isn't a kiddy pool. It's not a bathtub or a hottub but it's an ocean. You can go very very deep if you so desire.

As Deathnor notes it has some issues. Like all complex grand strategy games the AI has it's limits. It can pose a challenge but it's prone to being abused. The most fun seems to be in multiplayer. But singleplayer can hold dozens to hundreds of hours. It's not terrible, it's just AI. AI isn't at human level intelligents yet. I mean it struggles with Go, how can it comprehend 70+ factions, 700+ spells and hundreds of units?

The UI is pretty bad but workable, it's just not intuitive. If you want you can work through that. Look at it this way. This game allows you to pit Giant philistines who sacrifice virgin blood to demons and fallen angels to wage war against Scandinavian ice giants or Egyptian lizards with a knack for undead. Or a nation of bat people ruled by frog wizards with a strong Incan vibe? The lore in this game is amazing even if it has no campaign. You got undead romans who might have tried to resurrect Jesus, demon worshipping catholic inquisition, reincarnating Hindu monkeys, Atlantian fish people, bat people who worship and can steal the sun.

With the simple graphics also come advantages. Factions have a wide selection of unique units. Combat while hands off has a deep system with wounds and fighting. And magic, spells can be world changing. As mentioned before the sun can disappear but also another can be summoned. Time can be sped up so the living grow old fast, oceans can be frozen, harvests can go bad etc etc.

Pros:
-Game has long term continued support form the devs with large content and balance updates
-Modding community while not extremely active has put out a lot of interesting content that can substantially extend the life of the game.
-This is the most in depth 4X I've ever played. I have almost 500 hours just on steam and I only play multiplayer games (plus some playtesting before starting matches and such). Yet I'm still only an intermediate player when it comes to knowledge/skill. There are tons of nations I haven't tried yet, and probably hundreds of strategies I haven't tried.
-The game focuses on the combat aspects of a turn based strategy game, making the actual warfare the focus of the game, and consequently drastically better and more detailed than any game I've ever played before in the genre.
-Detailed lore and strong mythological fantasy aspects, it might not be a plus for everyone, but it's very well done and lends the game a unique flavor.

Cons:
-Extremely long learning curve. It's easy enough to find multiplayer games with other newbies with little to no experience, but it will take you a very long time to really learn the game well, so if you don't like games that you can't master quickly it might not be for you.
-Multiplayer games are mostly PBEM. Not everyone has a problem with this ofc, but it does make for a pretty slow paced multiplayer experience. LAN games happen as well via hamachi but it's a smaller group.
-Graphics are oldschool sprites. imo it looks pretty decent, it's very 2006.

Personally I've never had a probblem with the UI, but a lot of people dislike it.

A lot of UI issues are solved witht he poorly documented hotkeys, etc

(Well they arent completely undocumented as they exist both in the manual, and when you press '?', but for whatever reason, people seem to be very unaware of all the things that have been done to make your life easier)

I have been gaming since Colleco and my first computer was a Tandy 1000. I can't stress enough how much I love this game. I have said it another forum that it may be the greatest game ive ever come across. I'm a huge civilization fan and I feel comfortable saying that I enjoy this more.

I think you can learn the game pretty quick...it is not as hard as it seems but to really get a feel for the deep strategy...that will take many hours. I have seen 2 vets argue over how to play one faction both completely shocked at how the other guy played the faction. I have seen people tell me not to do something only for me to come in and crush them doing what I did...there is lots of room for ideas...and after all these years I think there is plenty of room more for new ideas. You dont have to cut and paste every strategy online. You can make your own plan and tweak it as it goes and find you are still successful. You will fall in love with a faction and be forced in a multiplayer game to play a different faction only to fall in love with that new faction.

I have to say im embarrassed that it took me this long to find this game. We need to get the word out. So far too on the desura forums and in a few groups that im in...every single person has been cool...the dom4 community is phenomenal. It is like a higher degree of species plays this game or something. Buy it if you like strategy games and have the time to learn the game.

rockpaper: I have no idea how to spread the word more. I've done what I can think of. If you have ideas, that would be a great separate topic.

Ya im running around telling everyone about it...although on steam spy it looks like they have sold approximately 50,000 copies which isnt too bad ...i just feel like its a secret treasure that we all found haha

Maybe organize a muliplayer tournament of somekind, with the winner being able to contribute ideas of something new to add to the game, comptettion usally draws attention. I'm sort of a noob at the game so i wouldn't enter but it would be cool to see veteran strategies.

Illwinter suddenly getting 10 million dollars and getting to spend half of it on glitzy but ultimately pointless graphics upgrades, and the other half on advertising would probably do the trick lol.

Isn't that how everyone else does it?

Doesn't always work.

Sunset still flopped, marketing couldn't save it it seems.

Fair enough, although it seems like a much weirder game, and they didn't really nail that spiffy graphics part.
Mormacil Jul 26, 2015 @ 4:07am
That whole thing was a disaster I think but it's an example that more advertisement doesn't neccesarily mean more sales. But it could and you're right. Ten million and the will of Illwinter to do it could elevate the popularity of the game. But it might fail.

Artsy hipster games have nothing to so with solid old school turn-based strategy. The latter is pretty much as old as PC gaming itself, the former is a fancy modern-day thing aimed mostly at casuals. TBH I don't feel like shedding a tear for those kinds of projects, they aren't even games in my book, and sure as hell they're not fun.

This. Gameplay wise this game was closer to house cleaning simulator 2015 than anything else. Dominions 4 is pretty much the opposite.
