Dude same here. I'm really upset. I'm trying to enjoy this game but it crashes before it even finishes loading every time.
Have you tried changing the game's setting.txt file from fullscreen = yes to "fullscreen = no"?

Hello
I had this same issue and was searching solution from all over the places. And managed to find a tip where someone told that you need HOI3 : for the motherland expansion also to this TFH expansion to work. so i did try that and all went smooth after that and got the game working again. So if you have had semper Fi expansion before and buyed only TFH after that, try buying motherland also. it worked for me

Hey guys,

Would it be possible to clarify exactly what problems we are having here... The error described in the original post is not very helpful...

I need to know before I can really help... What version of HoI you are using ? At what point in the game do you crash, are you playing, does it not start or does it crash on startup ? Whether you are trying to play online or with mods and what error code you are getting ? (If any).

I'll try to help you out anyway... Even though I have no idea what the problem you are describing is...

Paradox have recently released a hotfix for 'random CTDs' in game... You should install this over you TFH.exe and hopefully that will go to some extent of solving your problem.

http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?652777-Constant-random-CTD-s-TFH-4.02

You can find it on this thread on the 12th post (By Podcat !!)

Also in response to Tormuk's post I am absolutely shocked that people were not aware of the fact that TFH (4.02) requires FTM too run...

FTM (Or HoI 3.06 more accurately) is a a requirement for the latest expansion... Trying to run TFH off SF is a bit like trying to run the game with 15-20% of the game files missing :S ... I'm absolutely shocked that it worked AT ALL...

So just to clarify for you all... YOU NEED For the Motherland if you want to play Their Finest Hour... Otherwise there is no hope of it ever working...

Sorry for the not overly helpful response,
MrGiles

Hello
Yea i felt kinda dumb after finding out that my problem was only my own lack of reading info....
But i posted my "solution" cause if there was any change that some people are "blind" like me. But anyway, hopefully someone can repair this real problem that someone have about this case.

I wouldn't worry about it, you aren't the first person I have heard of that hasn't realised this... But even so, it never really ceases to shock me.

Paradox make their expansion policy VERY CLEAR on the forums and on their website, and as much as we might all disagree with it, is very clearly states that new versions of existing games will be released as expansions.

Now they get away with this because each expansion isn't just bugfixes, AI improvements and balance changes they also do add quite a lot of content with every expansion.

So unless an existing version of HoI has serious stability issues that must be addressed in a patch (Like they did in 1.4, 3.06 and the latest TFH hotfix for example) Paradox will wait until the next expansion until these issues are rectified.

(But regardless of this policy Paradox has patched each version of HoI quite significantly e.g. 3.05-3.06 introduced a WHOLE NEW MAP, hardly insignificant ;)

But anyway the basic principle follows that each expansion builds significantly on the previous expansion, not only adding new features, but also editing and removing a lot of existing content.

Thus why the development of HoI goes like this:

Vanilla = 1.4
Semper Fi = 2.03
For the Motherland = 3.06
Their Finest Hour = 4.02

It simply isn't possible to 'jump' expansions because then you are missing out on thousands of changes to the game that Paradox has made inbetween. (These changes are also why it is impossible (TFH exempt) to play previous versions of HoI if you have the latest version).

The confusion (at least in my opinion) arises because Steam misadvertises Paradox's expansions... The crucial point is that THEY ARE NOT DLCs as Steam classifies them.

Paradox calls them 'expansions' for a reason, they don't just add in a number of small token changes. Each expansion has comprehensively reworked HoI so much so newer versions of HoI are incompatible with older versions, in addition adding in some new features.

That is why they are not DLCs in the true sense.

If we compare what a true HoI DLC is, the German spritepack for example, with Their Finest Hour you can really see what the difference is.

The German spritepack makes a few aesthetic changes.

Their Finest Hour not only adds in a whole lend lease system, but it also reworks the entire amphibious landing system for example, as well as making thousands of changes to the existing AI and LUA. (And that is only a tiny list of what TFH did) They aren't really comparable at all.

But yet Steam continues to classify all HoI expansions as DLCs when they really aren't...

Iv'e met people that have just bought Vanilla HoI and TFH and been massively disappointed when they learn that they just wasted £14. Then they continue to blame Paradox for making a 'broken game' which is honestly not true at all... Paradox clearly tells everyone that if they want the latest version of HoI then they need all the expansions.

Whereas if Steam actually made it obvious, firstly that they ARE NOT DLCs and secondly that they are a SERIES where each consecutive expansion requires the previous one to work then there wouldn't be this confusion.

Yes... I know it is a lot of money to invest in the whole series at once, but I feel that if Steam didn't classify the HoI series in this way then at least people wouldn't waste £14 on TFH and spend it instead on SF and FTM giving them a 'newer' but not the latest version of the game...

Yey... My first discussion rant ;)

Hello
To MrGiles... i agree with you 100%. Because like you sayed Steam classifies them as a DLC and there was the reason where i got "confused". ( my lack of reading 1st and then doing) I did like you described thinking that if i buy TFH it will include all the parts needing to that game work.
Regardless you sayed your post was a rant... well it was full of good points and made atleast me realise these HOI DCL and Expansion differences.
So thank you for that :)
so no one has solved this problem yet, i have the sam proble toooo

Paradox has recently released a hotfix for TFH... You can find it here:

http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?652777-Constant-random-CTD-s-TFH-4.02

Extract over your TFH.exe and hopefully that should address your random CTDs

Let me know if that doesn't work... Thanks ;)
