Great Game with Massive Flaws.
Europa Universalis 3 is an exellent game. It challenges your mind and is probably the closest you will ever come to running a country. The music is well done and while the graphics aren't great they aren't terrible either. The gameplay is expansive and the countries number over 9000. That was a joke. Sorry I couldn't resist. its actually closer to 300. The strategy is beautifully done and the historical boundries are perfectly accurite right up until you start playing.
That said, There are a lot of problems.
1.The first and most obvious is the tutorials. Namely they don't exist. They used to, but then it got buggy and now it crashes after you try to play them. I suggest learning to play with the magical cesspool that is Youtube.
2. The pirates. Coastal countries are terrible. After you get to naval tech 9, pirates spawn at your coastal cities. Lots and lots of pirates. What makes it worse is that you can't do anything about it, because after you destroy them five minutes later thier back and they brought friends. There are fixes if you get all of the expansions but these removal methods are not user friendly.
3. cost. I like this game. I really do. I understand supporting a developer so that they can continue to produce good content. But $99 is a little ridiculous for what mostly amounts to character sprites. Its sad. just buy the expansions and you'll be fine.
4. Bugs. There arent a ton but the ones that are there are almost game breaking. just warning you. Again get the Expansions and you'll be fine.
5. Eurocentrism. Playing the asian countries is still fun, but most of the action takes place in Europe. and I get it I really do. History tends to look through a Eurocentric lense but thats not really an excuse for a game no matter how historically accurate.
all in all I would give this game a 7/10 IF you are willing to spend the time to get past the learning curve. If not I would have to say 4/10. I love this game. I really do, but I would just get EU4. from what I've seen it fixes most of the problems except for the learning curve.
