For my First Review of 2015, the first game I've passed in 2015: Violett
Violett is a very pretty game. The Backgrounds are lovely, colourful & have an Alice in Wonderland meets Honey I shrunk the kids sort of charm. It is a point and click adventure with a cute story waiting to get out.
Unfortunately the story never really does get out. There is little narrative in any form of presentation, verbal or non verbal and even less direction. The titular young girl has some telekinetic powers which seem to be limited to the very specific items the creators did not feel like animating while other times you can practically reach an item you need but have to float a ladder over to it to climb up and retrieve it. Where are her mind powers there?
The other abilities are only used to bypass a couple of road-block hazards which themselves are only blocking collection items. One of these skills is a floating power, kind of a limited flight, which is only used in maybe three instances and yet in the many other situations where it would be a big help in reaching some place it is somehow imposable for her to use.
If this had been part platformer these abilities would have been a lot of fun to play with but as it stands they seem to be just tacked on to again cut down on animation.
That said I, having studied animation myself, understand how much time and tedium can be involved in seeming simple motions so I do not blame the creators for that trick.
Pros : Easy to pick up and play
Pretty to look at
Often available for next to nothing.
Cons: Like a lot of point and click games, the puzzles are less about intellect and more about noticing what piece of the background is a different shade or makes the arrow become a hand.
Little story development.
A lot of very slow moving to and from-ing.
Pick it up on sale if you like point and click, don't if you don't
