It is a very innovative game in the sense of card design and game mechanics. Yes, you have the very staple elements (like mana gems and other creature abilities such as flying and trample/unstoppable) but were the game really shines its in the strategy. The game often feels more like playing chess than any regular card game I had played before. Turns are simultaneous, and the fields is divided between command, support, attack and defense zones. This allows for very complex duels were deciding when to attack, defend, bluff and target certain enemies to determine the outcome of a game. More than any other card game I have played, it is the least luck based I have ever seen. A well structured deck will very rarely suffer from a bad draw (that you can mulligan in the first hand) mainly because you can assign generals that might take care of the early turns and enhance your're over all strategy. The factions are interesting and offer a wide variety of combos and synergies that allows for plenty of deck tinkering and card synergies. I also really appreciate the theming in the sense that card abilities match the story of the factions:
Zombies grows stronger in death, they infect and spread until you overrun your opponent with wave after wave of the undead.
Angels will fly over most defenses and swarm opponents typically reaching flight by ascending. Ascending usually occurs when the card achieves a specific mission. Thus an angel themed of defending, will ascend once it kills an enemy attacker or by protecting another creature from damage.
Genesis- Machines will typically involve buffing or upgrading your robots into unstoppable juggernauts. They are the strongest in terms of customization, being able to copy most abilities of the other factions with technology.
Exiled are the demons who where shunned by the mages. As exiled their strengths lies in actually discarding them from the hand (as the unwanted) and generally coming back in a stronger form or with a lower cost.
Mages as one would expect have the most powerful spells, focusing on a control, but over all the weakest (in terms of attack and defense) creatures. They often involve many cards that involve, as in rituals, sacrifices to summon demons and the like.
Beast are well beast. They have typically the strongest creatures but the weakest spells. In a nutshell its's raw strength in creatures and their effects.
And the fire nation, whose strength lies in numbers, bypassing defenses and speed. Attack before your opponent is able to do anything. They also have abilities like purifying flames meant to be used against zombies or machines to stop them from reviving or rebuilding themselves.
This game is not for the feint of heart. I do not intend to discourage anyone from playing it, but as a reviewer I have to warn the player. To become competent it requires time to learn the concepts and the game play. It is not as easy to pick up as other card games and often it is more stressful to play a match than other game like hearthsone. The matchmaking is flawed at the moment and more often than not you will find yourself in one sided matches against more experienced players. Many of the people I know that started at the same time I did left the game frustrated. That, as well as the very small size of the community, will often leave you with long waiting times and very few low level players.
Finally the aesthetics. Although the animations are very well drawn and is a high point for the game itself, I find that the structure of the menus and card selections for deck building is unappealing. I feel that their could have been a better way to pan through your card collection when you are searching for cards that might work well together. There was also many small bugs during my time, but I am not weighting it as much for a free game in the Beta phase.
I have very high hopes for this game in the future. I know that it has everything it takes to be a very renown card game. Currently due to the bugs, poor matchmaking and small of amount of people actually playing it, it cannot compete with the larger titles currently available. However I still highly recommend this game on the grounds that these are all issues that can and will be resolved in time (as stated by the developers themselves that are aware of the issues I mentioned). So definitely give this game a try and keep it on your radar in the future.
