Elder Sign: Omens = Bad game design
What a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ game. I'm glad Plaid Hat Games is beating your ass down fantasy flight.

A ♥♥♥♥♥♥ game design is a game which bends the rules to arbitrarily make players lose.

You are ♥♥♥♥♥♥ game designers. Local content removed. I will ask for a refund.

Nothing wrong with the game Ive found.

This game is exactly the same as the tabletop version, which I assume you didn't know existed. And to be honest I have the same win/lose ratio between both versions. There's nothing wrong with the design.

Must admit it depends a lot on luck.
Anapoda Nov 6, 2015 @ 11:13pm
Sure it depends on luck but to blame the video game devs on that is pointless and silly, they aren't the ones who made the game mechanics. It's just an adaptation, and a very true to the original game at that.

Just get good.

the problem I find with the game is its all random. and a game built entirely on random chance is not a good skillful game. That being said some random is good. but for major parts of this game the key sections of this game are roll a die on a 1-5 you lose (not exactly this but is equivalent)

Oh. Fantasy Flight is a board game developer that is notorious with board gamers that produce either unskillful games or games that are loaded on one side, or even broken games. mansions of madness (board game by Fantasy Flight) for example has several senarios where game scripting (game is GM vs Players) can cause game to become unwinnable

Fantasy Flight is the best game publisher in the board game industry with such blockbusters as XWing, Star Wars Imperial Assault, Arkham Horror, Eldritch Horor, Runebound, Netrunner CCG, LotR LCG, and simply too many to quote them all.
Go away kids and let us play with decent adult games. :)

The game's somewhat more RNG heavy than most because it's a dice game. The RNG is actually part of the fun. It's basically Cthulhu Yahtzee.

The scenarios are all winnable. Ithaqua is quite obscenely difficult (mostly because you can get insta-gibbed on supplies), but beatable. It may not be to your taste since it can be a rather difficult and at times random game, but that doesn't mean there's a design error. It would be somewhat easier and probably play better if it was exact to the board game, but some liberties aren't terrible.

If you read Lovecraft or CoC and related fluff, part of the thing about the Ancient Ones is that they're basically gods. 1-4 people beating one of them should be somewhat difficult.

There are digital tabletop games that actually have problems with their pseudorandom number generators. It's really easy to mess up if you don't understand the math and just copypaste or use something from a library. I don't feel like tabulating rolls, but this doesn't seem to be one of them. It's working as designed. It's just hard.

Choosing the right adventuring party is a must. Not all abilities are created equal, and you can breeze through levels if you have characters who can limit the RNG or shut down negative effects entirely.

There is skill to this game; it's the skill of knowing how to stack the odds in your favour.

I enjoy the game. It requires you to think, match investigators to challenges, prioritize which challenges to solve --primarily to minimize midnight effects--and use skills to optimize glyph rolls. Maybe it's not for every type of gamer, but it's one of my favorites. :Wild_ESO: :ElderSign:

Honestly if it wasn't for the RNG aspect there would be no tension in this game. I happen to like the RNG in games like this, it's the only aspect you can't control, and not being in control is the essence of CoC. :)
