portraits
So, ive downloaded 20 new portraits for my 6 man party - but when i come to generate my own party not much happens, they are not there and only the default skins are there. I did move them into the portraits folder but the steam version of the game doesn't see them. Where do i put them?

Copy the "portraits" directory into your "Baldur's Gate - Enhanced Edition" directory within your Documents. Typically the location will look something like this (where USERNAME is your windows sign on):
C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents\Baldur's Gate - Enhanced Edition OR
C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents\Baldur's Gate II - Enhanced Edition

There is no Baldur's gate II - Enhanced Edition folder in my documents. Uninstalled and reinstalled - the game doesn't put one there. I created the Baldur's Gate II - Enhanced Edition folder in the documents folder and a potraits folder inside of that, but it doesn't work. I went off-steam and looked at several sites and tried different naming conventions, and none of them work.

there's no way you can run the game without that folder...
search for your Baldur LUA file and you should find the folder where you can place the portraits in.

Do you have a root account (admin login) on your computer? Login to the root and open up the documents, it could be there. This happens particularly if you choose the option "run as administrator" for the game.

already tried admin & public doc folders - nothing. Searched for baldur.lua, and.... it's on One Drive?? C:\Users\[me]\OneDrive\Documents\Baldur's Gate II - Enhanced Edition\portraits. I don't understand how it got there. Let's see if this works.... copying portraits into the OneDrive folder....

It works. Thank you very much.

@Wilphart, that's because your computer recognised the OneDrive documents folder as default docs folder. Well, my MS Word does that too. I'm guessing it's windows 10? At least your saves and characters will be safe..
