Darkout vs Starbound
So I've got about 10-20 quid left of my christmas budget to buy some games, and I was wondering if anyone has played both of these games and could possibly compare the two or highlight any pros and cons of both?

Overall from the look of these i think that Starbound knows what it wants to be (Terraria 2) while Darkout looks more like a cross between Starbound and Metroid. I myself am going with Starbound.

Starbound is great. As is Terraria, Super Metroid, Castlevania SOTN, etc.

This looks more like A Valley Without Wind to me unfortunately.

Starbound. Working multiplayer, and it's actually built around multiplayer. More variety and randomness.

Get both when you can.

I played both and can honestly say both are great games. Starbound has much more to offer but Darkout is still a great game.

Starbound is still in development, beta to be precise. It has a way to go yet before it's released. While this game doesn't have multiplayer yet I'm sure they are working on it as well as more content. Personally I'm getting them both but I'm waiting till starbound goes full release before I make a purchase.

And here you are *again* commenting on a game you admit to NOT HAVING PLAYED! What is wrong with you? How do you feel confident in making such assertions?

Yes, it bares a graphical resemblance to AVWW, but those of us who have ACTUALLY PLAYED THE GAME can safely comment that it is nothing like it.

Seriously, $team...poor show. Am I going to find your unfounded opinions on the forums of every game you haven't played?

OP: As Kyemaron said, try and get both if you can. Darkout has a very distinctive play style which I find absorbing and compelling. Can't wait to play it on Steam as soon as my key comes through from Desura.

Maybe get Starbound for now and Darkout when you can afford it?

Wait for a deep sale, then get both. Use those 20 quid right now to get something else on discount :) Or wait for the X-mas sales that are around the corner. I never get anything new, or, well, very rarely. Served me well in the past, both in regards to saving money and quality of the game :)

I bought both as kickstarters and I am in a bind as to which to play the last couple days.

Darkout is a FULL release, however whil eStarbound is still in early Beta. IF you want a game that isn't as buggy with less time before being fully playable you should check this out. Starbound isn't going anywhere. It's full release is a ways away and the game has already made millions. The company has even published 4 games on Steam while making this game and it is their first developed game. They published Rick of Rain a few weeks ago too. So...the company is doing pretty well and the promise of updates and mods for future are going to come.

Darkout needs the support more. I'm gonna play this a bit for a while and try to give out screens and a review to my Friends to see if it is worthy. :P

#1 Christmas is consumerism. Openly let family members know you'd rather something useful like a veg plant, baked cake etc rather then money spent. Then follow that rule yourself to save money and keep the pockets a little less line for the corporations plundering the planet.

#2 After saving money, play both. Fun times had

I bought Darkout, but i pirated the beta to get a feel for it first. It's worth it, so is Starbound

First, a clarification is in order.

Darkout is NOT a finished and completed release. There are plenty of items in the game labeled "description coming soon" (or sometimes "comming soon," with an extra M), production trees that seem incomplete and suggest more resources coming later (stone turns into tin, there is no natural tin ore, while tar in the primary ingredient in leather), and a couple of other mechanics in need of polish.

That being said, it isn't a bad game. The visuals are a nice change from Terraria's blockier aesthetic, and the contrasts of light and dark are well implemented. The items you create fit the game's SF theme nicely, and I really like the research mechanic.

I'm thinking of making a video to compare the two titles, most likely in a positive way for each, with the goal being to highlight what each does best.

Yeah...I guess Full release is misleading. I was assuming it was a full release based on what they had said about it, but playing it I see some of the things you mention as well. Some of the Manuals show that they are coming soon, or not complete.

The graphics and art style is definitely a BIG plus. It looks fantastic. They actually sort of remind me of the Trine series now that I think about it.

These games aren't as similar as they appear. This game has a dark vs. light mechanic of some sort does it not? That was really the reason I bought this because it was different and I wasn't going to just play 3 different Terraria games at once.

First, another clarification. Barring some bug fixes, Darkout IS A COMPLETED RELEASE, hence why its not under early access and why it actually shows up under the new releases tab on the main store page, unlike incomplete early access games.
That being said, IIRC they are still hoping for a multiplayer add on some time in the future.

The pieces in the manual that say coming soon are just to show that we will be adding guides on how those specific features work in the manual as we release updates.

If they are confusing we'll just remove the page entirely.

The game is a full release, as in there are no unfinished features.

However, we are not done adding content, and multiplayer. We have said that this is Stage 1. And we are going to be adding multiplayer in Stage 2.

The coming soon description were an error and we have fixed them now to show the proper item descriptions.

The tin ore one was a bug of the second Tin Bar recipe not showing in the crafting menu. this will also be fixed in the next patch later tonight
