Suggestions on dealing with death waves?
Does anyone have any suggestions concerning how to deal with the common problem of death spikes like these[s172.photobucket.com]? They typically lead to the dereliction of a big chunk of the city, a very red budget and the loss of up to 1/2 my population, so any help would be appreciated

The problem is that the deathcare and the healthcare share the same budget.

It would be much better if they had separate budgets, that way you could build the facilities and fund or defund accordingly.

You can micro them by clicking them on/off.

I had massive death waves, but they disappeared when I:

1. Made some graveyards just to get more hearses. Just because your crematorium capacity is high, it doesn't mean you have enough hearses. You can build cemetaries and/or increase funding to get more. They also need to be spread out fairly well.

2. Got rid of my massive traffic jams by building more highways and one-way streets.

this huge death-waves are a thing of huge population waves that come in your city. they all have the same age and after a while, they die close to eachother. Only thing to avoid that is very slow growing. Or live with the deaths. after a few weeks, new people get into the abondan buildings. ^^

Yep, that's why I needed my fleet of hearses. I don't have the patience to grow my city slowly, so I try to deal with it instead.

fleet is only as good as traffic. And there is zero need for cemetaries after a while, just build crematoriums with good access to every district.

My point was just that you can build cheap cemetaries to increase your fleet for a death wave. When you're rolling in cash, you don't need cemetaries.

The "death waves" as you describe them are EPIDEMICS that have spread through your population- flu etc. You can ride them out empty abandoned buildings are automatically re-occupied in 1 game month. It is all part of the cycle and rythmn of life in the city with so many people living in close proximity they spread disease.

I read a theory that it is due to the elderly population dying at the same time, because you zoned a large residential zone and they came (and died) at the same time.

Build a bulk area of cemeteries on the edge of the map, then just turn them on/off when you get a large increase, they will happily drive to the other side of the city for a body. Then when times are slow empty them, but make sure you empty them all at once i have noticed 1 cemetery sending the body's to another cemetery instead of getting them Cremated

I suppose they send the bodies (not body's) to the nearest free storage space i.e. the closest graveyard or crematorium upon emptying-so should i demolish a few buildings in between death tsunamis to spread them out?

Expand slow. When residential demand goes up, don't zone 1000 sqm of residence. Zone maybe 50 sqm, let them fill in, wait a short bit, then some more. Staggering out the rate at which people join also staggers the rate at which they die.
