FortressCraft Evolved

FortressCraft Evolved

Opportunity for FortressCraft
Apparently there are a number of Ouya users upset because Mojang has decided not to port Minecraft to the Ouya. (Which they previously said they might do.) This has created a market for other non-Minecraft block based building games to flourish on the Ouya.

I think FortressCraft is a great game. I think there may be a potential market here. I have no idea how much work an Ouya port would be, but I’m told that depending on the engine that FortressCraft was originally built with, it may be very easy. (Like, a couple nights of work.)

Videogame business is complicated. I don’t know what is or is not a good idea, but if Ouya isn’t charging a license fee to make the jump to their console, this might be at least considering.

Best of luck with everything. I have been enjoying the games your company has made. (Especially Ampu-Tea. That game is great.)

It's so easy to say "just" :)

It is android based yes. Unity licence appears to be about 1500 and for a game thats 7.99 and factoring in Ouya's 30% cut (reported by an article on Towerfall sales figures) that means they would have to sell 245 copies to hit the break even mark and start making a profit.

Whether or not 245 copies is feasible depends on Ouya software sales which are dicey. There are 800+ games on the system now. The more popular games blast 245 copies in a short time span, mid tier popularity games will hit that over time, and many many lower tier games may never hit this.

One route to go would be a 750 or 1500 kickstarter. If it works, the bar of entry is reduced or eliminated. If it doesn't work, it would help guage interest amoung the ouya user base.

I think the bigger problem is that the Ouya isn't a powerful enough system to run the game. My gaming machine manages 40-60 FPS which is decent considering its age but its still way ahead of what the Ouya has. I would be surprised if the Ouya could achieve >15 FPS on anything above Fastest setting.

Unless I'm very much mistaken, the best-selling Ouya game has shipped a whopping 15,000 units. This makes considering porting our game to Ouya an unlikely financial success. On top of that, performance would definitely be an issue. We could potentially drop the draw distance to Xbox-levels, but that might be doing our game a disservice. I've been working on porting other PG projects to Android (and thus Ouya) and I now have a firmer grasp of the pitfalls involved.

Once my game is out on Android and the Ouya, I'll be able to come back with a better answer, but I really suspect the Ouya is simply far, far too wimpy.

It's still better than the Gamestick tho.

Look at the 'last post' dates. 7 minutes, 1 day, 6 days, 6 hours. The Ouya has died, sadly. Potentially the V2 Ouya (which should be faster) would be more of an idea.

DjArcas, I'm afraid you are incorrect. The forum is very active- 14,000 users on the forum, and the last post as a mere 23 minutes ago! I'm on the forum every day and I can tell you there are AT LEAST 10 posts a day, and the chatbox is flled up with chat...

I, and others on the Forums hope that you bring Fotresscraft to the OUYA! :D
(A good idea would be to make a thread for it @ http://ouyaforum.com/forumdisplay.php?9-Upcoming-OUYA-Games-amp-Apps)

I think FortressCraft would do well on the OUYA, and some advertisement on the Forums would help sales, if the game is ever ported to OUYA...

Box, on most forums 10 posts a day is dead.

Active forums typically have hundreds to thousands of posts a day.

I said AT LEAST, did I not? In what world is 50 or so posts a day considered inactive? You should correct your post- "on most HIGHLY POPULAR forums"- not to mention that it's the Unofficial OUYA Forums!
You also have to consider that for a console charging into a market dominated by the big 3, the OUYA is doing very, very well.

I don't know bros. I'm on those forums quite often. They don't feel very dead to me. I do know the number of games released for the system continues to increase. I would throw down to get FC on my Ouya even if it resembled more of the XBLIG version than this Steam version. I understand if thats just not a direction the dev wants to go though. :blocky:

When you came to the forum the other day, I thought that you were being sincere in your mentioning of possibly porting the game but then I was pointed to this and I don't know what to think anymore.

But I'm here to clear something up. This is one thing that has been bothering me for a while. It's other developers who try to find a reason to bury OUYA when it's alive and well. Just because it isn't selling PS4 numbers doesn't mean it's dead in any way. It was never meant to go against the the Big 3.

If you don't want to port the game, that's fine but why trash OUYA like everyone else to justify it? There was a time when people made games for the love of making games, they would port their games wherever it was possible. Look at Double Fine, they put their games on OUYA. Look at others who do it at no cost.

Ouyaforum is nowhere near dead. It is an active fan forum. Instead of looking at the active sections, you took the times of the least active parts of the forum where we have contests, etc. Those are not everyday forums but the ones at the top had posts within minutes of each other and of course those were ignored. Being that I am part of the staff of the forum, I can tell you just how active the forum is.

Why be like everyone else who thinks it's cool to trash OUYA for no good reason. Why not show them you're better and put your game on OUYA.

If OUYA was dead then why is there an OUYA 2 coming? It would be pointless if it was dead.

As a fellow developer, you have the right to make whatever decision but I would hope that you do it based on actual fact and not conjecture. If you're worried about performance then why not put yourself down as an OUYA 2 launch title? Though the OUYA can handle more than people think it's capable of.

You're mistaken, but not by very much, probably. The best selling there was any information on was selling more than Towerfall at the time of that article, but not loads more.
Still, that was nearly 6 months ago, and they continue to sell...

Well, Towerfall sold 15,000+ and made $100,000+...
(As of late 2013)
