Oooooh, Spooky Slenderman is coming to touch your butt with his ticklefingers!
But seriously, this game looked half decent in the trailers and screenshots and what not, it looked like it could make the Slender games actually scary to me, if done right. But unfortuantley, this game is not done right, far from it.
You're all familar with Slender right, the free horror game built with unity that was about you running away from the Slenderman, a tall white guy from Internet campfire stories, while collecting pages for some reason. It was ok I guess, despite it being the very defention of jumpscare fest, but it was atleast free. Not anymore.
With Slender: The Arrival now you can get chased by a tall white man while collecting pages. But with prettier graphics!
This game tries to set up a plot, starting out with you jogging threw the woods to a childhood friend's house, but when you get there she isn't there. Just a buttload of scribbles on the wall. You walk around for a while and eventually Slendypants pops his head up threw a window. Then you have to collect pages, that cause the Slenderman to attack you.
First off, for a game that's trying so hard to set up a story, it does a pretty poor job at explaining what we're doing and why we're doing it. Why do we need these pages, what could these drawings by a 4-year old tell us, and why do we want them if they make Slendy attack you? Secondly, I don't really find Slenderman himself that scary, he's just a tall white guy to me, so it might be the fact that I'm also very tall and pale thats putting me off. If you were more enriched in the lore of Slenderman then I guess this could be scary. Maybe.
But thirdly, and most importantly, the gameplay is just awful. I like to judge horror games partially by how much they can hold up after all the spooks end. Game's like Amnesia and Five Night's at Freddy's I managed to like as I did find them fun to play after I stopped being scared. But Slender isn't one of those games, every single level is walking around, collecting or turning on X of a certain object, while Slenderman jumpscares you, or on one level, you get chased by a human. Rather than running away, from it, you get to stand still for a second and flash your light at it stop it from running at you.
Over and over and over. This game was so grating and just plane boring to play that I couldn't even bring myself to get to final level. The point where I stopped playing was when I burnt to death in a forest fire level, where slenderman appeared several times but I didn't notice because he blened in with the trees.
In conclusion, just stick with the original Slender and all it's spinoff games if you found them scary, rather then throwing 10 bucks at this and getting basically the name thing with some pretty graphics.
