An otherwise brilliant metroidvania game hindered by frustrating combat and awkward controls. I really really want to like this game and it was on my wish list forever but it was quite a disappointment.
-Its metroidvania!! (I'm a fanboy of the genre which makes this review that much more painful)
-Great art style
-Variety of moves and spells: You can find various spell orbs that grant a class of spell (fire, ice, etc) that gives 4 abilites. Some are used for mobility which opens up new map areas.
-Variety of viable builds
-"Money" consists of collecting varios crafting mats and trading them with vendors. A very good change from traditional coin collection.
-Recoil in combat results in chain-stuns. This is especially prevalent in the air. In the forced fight rooms, it is not uncommon to get hit once in the air and then chain-stunned to death (from a long series of 3-5 damage hits). Look at how many other negative reviews complain about this issue.
-Only one save slot alloted to each character. You can have different character runs saved, but each character only gets one save slot. This, combined with the fact that you can end up in "dead-end" situations where your character is too weak to beat an enemy but you're retry point is stuck, you are forced to backtrack. Not too often, but it happens.
-AWFUL air combat/controls.
-SWING AND A MISS! Sometimes you will swing at enemies *directly* in front of you but completely miss. This is almost always followed up by you getting hit by them, of course, leading to the aforementioned chain-stun issue if other enemies are around. (especially prevalent in air combat)
-Can't look down. At the top of a tall room and need to work your way down slowly? Sorry, tough luck. Just jump and hope you land on a platform.
-No quick retry option: retrying restarts you in the room with full health (so you dont use up your potions since the game does not have save points [which refill potions] before bosses...). You must either wait to die or go to your inventory -> main menu -> yes i want to quit -> skip opening video -> retry...it doesn't take that long but why the 3 extra steps? I should be able to hit Escape->retry.
