I've enjoyed all my time playing this game. So much so that I will write my one and only steam review.
I will only speak of general gameplay and not really of game features. You can find those elsewhere.
I only play SP and without the harder settings (e.g. zombies always run) enabled so there is even more gameplay to be had. I also only play on randomly generated maps which are infinite. You define a seed value to generate these maps. There is a standard map to play that I've never seen. =P
There are minor bugs in this Alpha build but no real gamebreaking bugs. The Fun Pimps are on the ball and do what they can to fix those even though the focus is on content (Alpha = content, Beta = bugfixes). I don't think I've ever had a CTD with this software.
-Crafting is good and fairly complex. Quality in crafting is linked to your level. Loot is available at any quality level.
-Structural integrity is a thing and does make you think about your basebuilding which can be massive both below ground and above. You are limited to about sixty meters below grade before hitting bedrock and much more above grade (if it doesn't collapse!).
-Combat is varied with the different zombie types and rely on appropriate tactics. Firearms are great to use but turns you into a heatscore. Sometimes it is better to run away.
-They have what they call heatmaps. Crafting, cooking, building and killing creates heat which attracts zombies. Heatmaps do cool down after awhile though so you do not have to be a nomad and continually wander the map.
It can be a little frustrating at the beginning, starting off with nothing until you level up a little (stamina mainly) and start collecting gear. Pretty well everything is gated behind finding books to learn from. Those are randomly generated so unless you find a bookstore, you could be a while on your own without decent tools to work with. This varies gameplay a great deal.
At this point, XML files are open so you can customize a fairly decent amount of the game and create content. Mods are being made already(!) considering the game is still in an Alpha stage. You are also allowed a wide range of options to click on when starting a new game so there is varied gameplay without editing XML files. This ranges from easy street to impossible.
The ONLY thing that I dislike about the game is you are allowed a maximum of four hour days (one day compressed into a four hour period) and the standard gameplay is a forty minute day. Gameplay is not linear between the different time periods. Everything is centered around the forty minute day so you will have to eat and drink a lot more with an extended day period. With a four hour day, gameplay is easier because of more time to loot and build between the incoming zombie hordes. Even this is not really gamebreaking but it is a little weird.
I do recommend this game. Even if they stopped development now, I've gotten my money's worth. Alpha 12 looks to be awesome with even more content planned down the road.
