Early Access Review
TL/DR at the bottom.
What do you get when you buy this game? Well, if you already know that its a sandbox voxel-based tower-defense inspired rpg survival first shooter.... damn that's a mouthful right there. So, what do you get? The bestest game ever made (that is still currently in Alpha), that's what!
I never liked Minecraft. I started hating it after some years. I did like DayZ, played a bit but got bored because the maps were too big/empty. I guess I didn't play on the right servers. Then a friend of mine gave me 7 Days. I would have never bought it. No way. That was back during Alpha 9. I had nothing planned that Saturday so I fired up the game. Started digging down with a friend to make an underground base. He was teaching me stuff about the recipes and what not as I was digging. Then he left and I kept on digging a little bit more. And a little more. Then I figured I should go put the trash out since it was already 4am Monday morning... The trash never made it to the street that week. But my base got big, real big! I had like 20 rooms in it, 19 of which were decoys, and I had.... lots of sadness when the server got reset. Little did I know, a game in Alpha stage is often reset...
Wow, ok. Now I know what an alpha is. That **** isn't for me. No way. Or so I thought. Then I told myself that if I had been raided by other players and lost everything it wouldn't have been any different. I love PvP so I can respect that. Then I fired up the game. I didn't have much planned that week. I started digging down with a friend and... another friend bought the game out of nowhere and joined the server we were on. So we dug more. But this time it made no sense to build a palace underground, all I wanted was some PvP resources to make ammos and go shoot people. Then one day I heard the sound of thunder! I mean auger! the sweet, sweet sound of fast-paced destruction! I needed to get me one of these!!!! Then the server got reset.
Wow, ok. Now I really know what an alpha is. **** that!!!! Then I read the patch notes. I must have shouted out loud when I read them. It was filled with godly bits of pure joy. I could feel the love the devs had for the game. And the lack of sleep too. This game was gonna be the bestest ever made. So I fired up the game. That was back when Alpha 10 came out. So I fired up the game. This time I knew the resets would be plentiful but I didn't care, I just wanted to kill as many people as I could before the reset. So I started looking for a server with the exact set of rules I wanted and from those few that had them, some had bad admins, some had too low pop (that would include the one that a friend of mine started and that we tried to get more people into) and others had rules close to what I wanted but not exactly it. So I settled for one of them because having good admins that create a good atmosphere with little to no hackers is essential. And then I had a boatload of fun. Until one thing came out in one of the hotfix: a container that could be locked and couldn't get unlocked by the enemy players, forcing them to destroy or avoid it. No more raiding after that point since everyone would hide their stuff in those and we were not allowed to destroy stuff senselessly.
Wow, ok, no more raiding, I guess Christmas is coming in 2-3 weeks anyway, I've played too many hours already, I got others games that are being neglected. I shall take a break. Then the devs asked for people to register if they were interested in being VIP testers. Hmmm... Maybe I could shorten the duration of my break and lend them a hand, this game has brought out the tester in me I think. Why not? So I became a VIP tester. For a while, **** ***** ** ******** ** ***** *******. And then ****** ** ****** * **** *** ******. The last month before the patch we ****** ****** ** ******* ** ********. It was ridiculous. Becoming a VIP tester was one of the best idea I've had in a while.
While I was a tester I got to see from (just a tiny bit) closer how the devs work, well at least the QA manager. These guys must all have 2 hearts each cause they pour at least one of them daily into this game. This game must be sucking the living life out of them cause they barely sleep. And I'm sure they are enjoying every second of it. By enjoying I mean the sort of joy one gets while eating ramen noodles at 4am because they really really wanna pump out the next patch before going to sleep and they didn't go to the grocery store (who am I kiding, they didn't get them to deliver) in the past week (or was it 2 weeks?).
During the 3 months we tested, I believe more than 700 bugs were (introduced and) fixed, while also switching to Unity 5. Using the word workhorses would just be an insult at this point. These guys are pure dedication and passion.
TL/DR: This is not finished. Its not even close to getting in beta. Its the best alpha game ever made (hum, what about Star Citizen you ask?.... well....) that isn't kickstarted with 40M+ $$. If you like any of these words: sandbox voxel-based tower-defense inspired rpg survival first shooter.... or most importantly the word ZOMBIE, then by all mean, get this game!
P.S.: No, H1Z1 is not as good. Neither is Rust. Even if Rust had a baby with H1Z1, on steroids.... just no.
