Stuck on loading screen (animations)
Played the game fine for an hour after installing, then on the next launch and every time afterwards, it's been getting stuck at the loading screen. I've tried all the suggestions on the official Support page (launch options, beta, verify cache, reinstall, install secondary stuff such as vcredist, etc).

Nothing works... game is broken, from a search on the forums seems this has been an issue since launch.

Any ideas?

After trying all the suggestions posted in various places such as this forum, the game's support page, etc -- I unplugged a keyboard that required and was using the USB 3.0 port, and the game works as long as nothing is using USB 3.0, it seems.

Hey, thanks for posting your solution to this problem. I can't seem to find any keyboards that require USB 3.0 to test for myself, what keyboard do you own?

Also, if you have time can you try going to the Options menu and disabling Gamepad Discovery, then restarting the game with the keyboard connected to see if that also solves it for you?

Thanks!

Hi Matt, no problem. The keyboard I have that uses USB 3.0 is a Corsair RGB K65. I believe all of the Corsair RGB series can use USB 3.0 (they either use one 3.0, or two 2.0 ports).

I do have the launch option '-NoGamepadUpdates' enabled, would that do the same thing as the in-game option?

So here's what I just tried:

1. Went in the game with nothing plugged into USB 3.0, went to Options and disabled Gamepad Discovery

2. Exited the game

3. Plugged Corsair RGB keyboard in via USB 3.0, launched the game

4. Game now works fine even with something plugged in via USB 3.0

I'm assuming this means the launch option '-NoGamepadUpdates' doesn't do the same thing, or doesn't work? I don't remember where I found that launch option as a suggestion, I think it was somewhere on this forum.

Also, previously when it was getting stuck (before I tried unplugging the USB 3.0), it was getting stuck at the TowerFall screen where 'Ascension' comes via an animation, the animation would get stuck roughly halfway while the music continued playing indefinitely.

Hope this helps. Let me know if there's anything else I can help test.

Also, out of curiosity I just went back into the game after letting it run normally for ~10 minutes, and turned Gamepad Discovery back on. The game quickly (within 5 seconds) became unresponsive visually while the music continued playing.

Then I unplugged the keyboard in the USB 3.0 slot, and the game almost immediately started working again.

I guess the only weird thing remaining that I can't think of an answer to is why the game worked perfectly fine for over an hour on the first launch (with the keyboard plugged in via USB 3.0 and Gamepad Discovery on default, which is On), and then wouldn't work afterwards unless either USB 3.0 wasn't being used, or Gamepad Discovery was turned off...

TowerFall uses both XInput and DirectInput in order to natively support as many gamepads as possible. It looks like for some reason, USB 3.0 keyboards are making the DirectInput gamepad checks lock the game. TF checks for gamepads on the menus at regular intervals if there are less than 4 already found. As soon as I can get a USB 3.0 keyboard I'll be able to test more, but turning off gamepad discovery does the trick for now.

I removed the -NoGamepadUpdates startup argument when I added Gamepad Discovery to the options menu, but now I'll be sure to add it back in. They do the same thing.

Cool, sounds good. I'm glad I could get the game working again, it's a lot of fun. :)
