This is proof that a game can have co-op/multiplayer and still be incredibly scary.
There's a good variety of maps in the game, and the developers seem to add more and more every once in a while. There's a lot of variety in the monsters. One person gets to be the monster while the others are humans trying to escape. The monster player can choose from a handful of monster types, including a blind ghost who can only see by sounds (like sprinting, opening/closing doors, etc.), a ghost girl that's basically Samara from The Ring, and a large brute creature that can turn invisible.
Sadly, the game seems to be dying. The last few nights that I've tried to play, I haven't been able to get into a single match. There's always a private server with 2 or 3 players in it (the game is 5 player max), and then one sole person sitting in a server, but no one else joins (and 1v1 isn't very exciting in this game).
It's a great game, and by far the best multiplayer horror game (White Noise Online is the only other one I can think of, though), but while I do recommend it, I only recommend buying it if it's on sale (meaning there'll be more people playing it while it's on sale) or if you have at least two or three other friends wanting to also play it with you.
