One of the best RTS games on the market
If your friend is in to RTS, recommend it to them!
I started my wargame craze when I first picked up a copy of Wargame: Airland Battle. I loved almost everything about it. Almost. The problems were that the maps were all pretty much identical, it was restricted to land warfare, and there were some graphical bugs. So you have no idea how excited it made me when the first Wargame: Red Dragon trailer hit the internet. I saw boats and planes and boats fighting planes and naval landings and jungles and mountains and so much more it almost made my brain melt. As soon as I possibly could I bought myself a copy and I was blown away by how awesome it was.
Since I already had a lot of experience in the previous games, I jumped right in to a big scale war. My land units were ready to rumble, the airplanes were being geared up in their hangars, and the ships were being ships. I thought that I would dominate like I did in Airland Battle. When the game started, huge, no, massive firefights broke out that looked so real it felt like I was there. I was mesmerised by the beauty of the action unfolding on my screen, however before I could even get a grip, my entire army had been reduced to a single squad of battered infantry, running for their lives across a mountain. Why, I thought to myself, could this happen? The answer is that the games are actually totally different, but in a good way. The terrain and new field-of-view adds a more tactical feel to the game, and the units have greater specialties. On top of that the maps are much more detailed and have different environments clustered together like they are in real life. Each of those aspects make Red Dragon surprisingly better than the previous game.
In Airland Battle, you have your fields, your forests and your towns. That gets boring very quickly, so in Red Dragon, the developers added deserts and jungles and oceans and mountains and swamps and rivers and even more to make sure you are constantly gripped to your keyboard, maneuvering your army based on the specialties. Some people have told me that the water does not make a difference, but that can’t be farther from the truth. Now people can’t just camp out in forests near bridges and wipe out thousands of units, since some vehicles can cross rivers. And let me tell you; there is nothing more awesome than watching a fleet of landing craft have a massive beach landing while they are under constant fire from artillery.
The graphics are one of the best new additions. Forests look more real, fire looks like fire (finally), the units look like real units, and the special effects are PURE AWESOME! I’m giving an official Techno Shark thumbs up to the developers for doing such a fantastic job on the graphics in this game. Even though the maps are so large, you can zoom in to a very close distance and it just keeps looking better.
All in all, Wargame Red Dragon is undoubtedly one of the best real time strategy games in existence. From its stunning graphics to its badass combat, this is the perfect game for any RTS fan.
