OK first off weapon in picture is a M1 Carbine, not a M-14. South Korean Reserve and Security units use the M1 Carbine, as well as many police departments. The M1 Carbine first showed in South Korea in 1950 as the US rushed surplus WW2 era weapons to South Korea after the North invades. The smaller M1 Carbine was a better fit for the smaller frame of the average South Korean soldier than the M1 Garand or later the M-14. The M14 is in the Korean Army but more a ceremonial weapon for Flag and Honor Guards than a field weapon. Not to say units never used them in the field.

I thik that SK have mandatory military service, so the "salary" is less then a normal wage. But there are also perks like free meals, housing, travel, medi care etc. So the "salary" is just for luxuries as all the basic needs are taken care of.

As I have pointed out in the games timeframe the south korean army used m14's which the americans had supplied them when they were in vietnam. And whilst Japan and south korea do have a dislike if a conflict against china and/or North Korea occured it would be a case of 'The Enemy of my enemy is my friend'. The Korean peninsula was occupied by Japan from 1905/7 until 1945. North Korea/South Korea did not exist as a seperate entities until post WW2. And it was the usual post war UN you (Soviet) get half, and the west got half. Soviet troops entered Korea late Aug 45, and post war the 38th Parallel became the new boundry between the Koreas. Korea after the occupation based on the Japanese behavior during the occupation never really got along with Japan post war, and in many cases till this day.

Stationed at Camp Hovey, South Korea 1977, we had a contingent of KATUSA (Korean Augmentation To US Army) with us. They had seperate barracks as well as seperate mess facilities. And as a courtesy they could use our mess halls. And they never seemed 'starved' or unhappy with thier lot in life as military service at the time was mandatory. KATUSA's had it better than regular SK troops but we never was a serious issue with the morale or physical appearence of the SK troops and we interacted all the time. When we did our DMZ month SK Forces were right beside us and other than uniform and size of the troop, there was no difference. Understand even the US Military paid far less than the standard US economy 'minimum wage' as well, but we had 'free' no cost barracks and mess halls.

I never saw M-14's in the hands of SK Forces in SK while I was there the trasition to the M16 was complete in active forces, except for thier version of National Guard and Reserves which still carried the WW2 castoff M1 Carbine, M1 Garand, and BAR.
