Can't see View in 'VR Mode' option with DK2 [fixed]
Update [fixed]: I got it to appear by opting into the beta of SteamVR itself.

I put together this guide for those who want to get everything set up right from scratch:

http://www.roadtovr.com/how-to-enable-oculus-rift-dk2-half-life-2-steamvr-steam-big-picture-virtual-reality-mode/

----

Original post:

On a somewhat old but functional Windows PC (can run some Oculus Rift DK2 stuff, but not much). Just installed a fresh copy of steam today after reading about the DK2 update.

I've installed the SteamVR tool and the Steamworks SDK tool, restarted my computer, opted into the Steam client beta, and made sure my DK2 is set in extended mode. Still, I don't see the VR Mode option under Steam's View menu.

I've also installed Half-Life 2, and I can see the VR mode option in the settings, but it is grayed out.

I have the Oculus Rift 0.4.1 runtime installed, the firmware updated, and it works fine when launching the Oculus Desk demo scene from the configuration tool.

Any thoughts? Is it possible that my old PC (mid-range gaming desktop from four years ago, running Radeon HD4600) is lacking something needed to even see the option in the menu?

Already got it working actually, thanks though!

it worked for me yesterday, opted into the steam vr beta etc, had my rift on extended mode, and saw it in the view menu. However, today I've been trying for like an hour but it seems to have disappeared from the view menu. Nothing's changed, I still have my rift in extended mode etc, and can even play Half-life 2 in VR still, but not steam vr. Ive tried opting out then in again in both steamVR and steam beta, I've tried restarting drivers and runtime, I've tried rebooting several times and and restarting steam several more times... whats weird is it was working perfectly fine yesterday :/

Exactly the same for me! Maybe an update to the client? Maybe SteamVR is taking a long weekend off.

Yeah I have the same issue in that it worked yesterday but not today and nothing has changed. I suspect a steam client update has screwed it?

Have the Problem too. I have the Beta installed. I switched today to Direct HDM mode for some Testing and Back to Extended mode, I think Steam was still running.
Now everytime i try to start VR mode, it opens a Browserwindow, where i can download the OVR runtime

That exactly the same with me. In tools it opens oculus dl, the desktop shortcut opens a commandlinewindow that soon disapears.
But no chance to select viewmode

Same for me.
- SteamVR installed (Beta)
- Oculus Runtime installed (0.4.1)
- Oculus set to Extended Mode (which is a pain in the ♥♥♥ BTW and really shouldn't be supported anymore)
- No SteamVR menu entry under view visible

Exact same problem. Had it working, then it stopped. Got it working again by opting out then back in to beta. Then it stopped again and now can't get it to show in view mode no matter what I try.
Steamvr desktop icon now sends me to oculusvr.com developement login page too.

I found my Problem, maybe it helps you too.
Check if vrserver is running. If not start it by Hand. It is found under
SteamApps\common\OpenVR\bin\vrserver.exe

I Also restarted the VR Service in the OCulus Config tool. Maybe you should do this first
Spyro Aug 21, 2014 @ 4:44am
@Lowkey: There is no directory 'OpenVR' under this path in my installation. Do you mean 'SteamVR'?

When I try to start vrserver.exe by hand it immediately crashes. I found no log or something so I made a quick screenshot:
http://s1.directupload.net/images/140821/d8e7uj92.png

I tried to start vrcmd_x64.exe, too but it also crashes:
http://s7.directupload.net/images/140821/kzhrflb4.png

EDIT: Found the logs under another directory but I am not allowed to upload files so I put them into my Dropbox public folder:
- https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/24358204/steamVRLogs/vrclient_vrcmd_x64.txt

It seems that SteamVR rapidly tried to load this 'vortex' driver (do they mean VorpX?) which fails.

- steamvr.cfg looks like this:

[steamvr]
driver = oculus
hmd = 203CR5092QAN

- version.txt content is '1408414229'

- SteamVR\config\oculus is completely empty

- SteamVR\drivers\oculus\utils is also emtpy except a empty directory 'Resources\DeskScene' (should this be the deskScene from the runtime?)

I tried to redownload SteamVR (deleteded directory by hand an revalidated the installation) but it didn't work. SteamVR downloaded 27 files, but the the new installation didn't work either. Restart didn't change anything.

if you don't see the SteamVR in the view menu try to launch steam with "-vrforce" as parameter
MAC22 Aug 23, 2014 @ 6:18pm
i have exactly the same problem as many of the above
- No SteamVR menu entry under view visible
what is the latest on what is causing this?
@mitz - can you tell me what exactly you mean by add "-vrforce as parameter"?how can you change this?
also interestingly (seemingly without steamVR running property) i managed to get DCS and half life running in rift..............
milz Aug 24, 2014 @ 3:05am
just add -vrforce to the steam launch shortcut. (...\steam\steam.exe -vrforce)

But i think this shouldn't be necessary anymore since the last Steam update.
