If the speakers are even halfway between the two I'll be happy enough. I was told they unscrew so you can keep using cans or whatever you prefer. I find that interesting because the possibility is there for a third party to make better speakers that are compatible.
I'll report back when we get ours and let you know where on the spectrum they fall.
Game freeze up while trying to exit it (looking at you, John Wick...)? Taking the headset off takes about 3 seconds and putting it back on exactly as it was is another 3 seconds, with no additional headphone or strap fiddling. Fantastic.
I can't possibly tell you how much better it is, it's just worlds ahead of the other strap. Once we took the original strap off and compared it to the deluxe strap, it was hard not to laugh at how crap it is, it's just a flimsy bit of stretchy material. My one was actually starting to fall apart. This new strap is like a whole piece of premium hardware by comparison, which it is!
It's incredibly comfortable, about x1000 easier to put on and take off and the adjustment is as simple as turning a little dial around, making sharing VR with others ACTUALLY possible without stressing over those bloody velcro straps.
You can pop the Vive on your forehead, keeping the actual headmount in place, and have it just sit there comfortably (it also puts *hardly* any weight on the front of your head! It's all so well balanced!) whilst you do other things.
Your adjustment can be super tight, yet it will come off when you need it to WITHOUT adjusting, due to springs, and be put back on. Set and forget adjustment.
My verdict on the headphones is pretty much the exact same as everyone else, they are good enough and I was happily surprised of the quality. But it's nothing to blow your socks off with, unlike the rest of the strap mind you! They are good enough for me NOT to bother using my premium headphones.
first issue i came accross was the low sound I experienced. The fix was to go to steam vr, settings->audio-> uncheck "enable Gain reduction on vive hdmi audio" BOY I CAN SAY ITS THIS LOUD AND VERY GOOD QUALITY AUDIO!
The other issue I had was my default vive face gasket. I ordered the VRcover PU leather 6mm. my visual field has improved drastically.
Another issue was the cord. It hangs to the side. It was pulling my headset to the side and my visual was wobbly and was unbalanced and caused eye strain. I looked further into the box and there is a velcro strap. i placed this strap between the headset strap and the frame of the deluxe audio strap and straped the 3 line cord of the vive through the back middle and and tightened it. Now my unit is balanced.
One last issue i had was the pressure from the weight of the vive itself. I resolved the problem by adjusting the top strap so my vive was balanced enough ontop so the device spreads pressure accross the whole gasket. You might feel more comfort with the narrow strap which I am about to try. It's been fine after these little adjustments.
One last mod was to remove the audio itself and use my g933. I don't see a need for this but unless I use my teamspeak application which is horrible at swapping audio on the fly. This is a whole different issue I resolved by having a record properties and adjusting the audio mannually instead of teamspeak managing this. real issue swapping microphone from vive to g933 and this is because of teamspeak and not the vive. this last issue is a whole different topic.
I wanted to second this as my 6mm (high-FOV) covers also arrived. I had previously made my own similar using neoprene, but wanted something I could wipe clean since it's been hot! Switching back to the foam for a bit was not better, they just became sponges, and after having high-FOV for almost 10 months the tunnel effect was noticeable.
Happy to be back where I was with FOV, but also a nice cover I feel comfortable passing off to a friend after a quick wet-nap. I do notice some slight spectral effects with brighter lights now that I'm closer to the lenses but like before it doesn't bug me and quickly became forgettable.
Putting on the HMD with the cans is mostly effortless, and taking them off is super easy since I just grab everything where it meets at the top. Only having to deal with one super-cable makes it mostly transparent. If I want to use just one or the other I slide the velcro ties to the base of the cables and they become independant. Some people have mentioned the heat but they also love the bass. A lot of these games have much better sound design than earbuds are capable of showing off.
It's slightly cumbersome but no complaints so far. It's good for a small to medium office but I wouldn't want this setup in the demo area. The new slim 3-in-1 cable is so much better for large spaces and that's where the deluxe strap is headed.
Setup was fairly easy. Takes a bit of force to get the new strap on the HMD but the stud is metal so wasn't worried. The strap has good placement on the back of the head and after tightening it felt nice. Even with 6mm foam under a bright light, I didn't notice any edge leakage.
Something I had not heard mentioned was that the headphones have a soft click to hold them against your head. It has a good feel to them, no real pressure, and alleviated my worry that they might move away from the ear with quick head movement or be too tight. It's been a while since I used on-ear headphones but the lack of pressure against the earlobe made it enjoyable.
The thing I was most interested in was the sound quality. Having the Samsung earbuds at 1 and Sennheiser cans at 10 I would say these are a 6-7.5 with some minor tweaking. Out of the box, they were slightly above average headphones. Go into sound Properties, enable Bass Boost, and the difference is striking. Adding in the new Windows Sonic spatial sound for 7.1 emulation (or pay for Dolby) also seemed to have a noticeable effect. Cheap headphones can't handle Bass Boost, these can, and some passable low freq is what I was hoping for.
If you're a broke audiophile or a dev popping the HMD on and off all day this is a must have, without a doubt. My only concern is the routing for the 3-in-1 cable does cause some stress on the plugs/sockets when you adjust it. I'm 100% positive one of these days I'll have green lines or some other symptom of a loose cable. Easy to fix, just something I'm anticipating even with care. If the routing for the cable had a clip instead of a channel you could put in some slack and not worry about stressing the sockets. I'll probably cut a piece of rubber that fits in the channel to achieve a similar effect.
Pleasantly surprised to have one. I do feel this should have been 3/4 the price. If it doesn't fall apart or get janky over the next year (with decent care on my part) I'll have no buyers remorse.
The foam does not fall off on mine since 2 or 3 weeks. Perhaps it's a new revision.
Vive without this audio strap is garbage.
I can finally look up and down without having a blurry view due to misaligned lenses.
yeha i want one but not shoveling out more money
