It's not perfect. Far from it - but it's got some of what I want in a zombie game... none of them ever seem to pull it all together though so I can't complain... too much. This one's got barricading locations, scavenging for loot that you NEED to survive, tension between the survivors, and permadeath. It's kind of a tense game, even though it's mostly text based. I breached a buildiing before scouting it - that was one big mistake. One final, big mistake. I sent three in to breach with what I thought were decent weapons and a good chance to make it back out. Wrong. So I send in the cavalry with upgraded guns and lot of ammo. The three from the first group had fallen as the two remaining, wounded (why I didn't send them initially), survivors made it inside. Then they quickly became - well... not survivors that's for sure. Oooops.
So, negatives. Yes, the above "story" isn't a negative. Far from it. My fault for not scouting first. With "improved' binoculars... bringing me to a negative. Modifying normal items to be "better" at what they're built to do in the first place. It's stupid. I can "upgrade" a butter knife. You mean sharpen it I hope 'cause anything else is going to make it less good at ... buttering. You can upgrade binoculars. In a zombie apocalypse. You can upgrade... binoculars. Who the fudge has extra powerful lenses laying around for binoculars? You "upgrade" firearms by making them "steady", or some other adjective... yeah, think the manufacturers did that already... so yeah, I hate the upgrade system. Can't pick an item directly either, just upgrade a category of items and you get random bonuses. Stupidest one I saw so far was upgrading, and get this, weights. Yup... weights. How the heck do you upgrade weights in the middle of a zombocaplypse? (that means a zombie apocalypse... it's obvious) Food consumption and resting are random, as are playing chess, solitaire, drinking, etc. Not much self control there people, plus they never get along, and I find the relationships to be rather cryptic - plus the "rumour" system could be useful to some degree - but I find it clunky.
I recommend this for what it is, just make sure you know what this game is before you buy it - and try to get in on sale for crying out loud. Steam ALWAYS has sales. Heck, it's 50% off right meow.
p.s. I wish I could combine several parts of this game in a blender with DayZ, 7 Days to Die, Rust, Rebuild 1 and 2 (if you haven't tried these, check out Sarah Northway's brainchildren.. and Rebuild 3 on the way), Dead State and State of Decay and have the perfect zombocalypse (I know, not a word - but I like it) game pop out.
