I have now tested this on two separate machines and it crashes on both. The previous report was Windows 7 x64 with an I7 processor. This one is on Windows XP x86 with a Core Duo processor. Both crash, making this unplayable. It's really disappointing to have that kind of problem during a discount sale when people are the most likely to buy the game.

Our programmers are investigating the issue. We have some questions to come up with a fix:

1. After this error - can you relaunch the game?
2. This error occurs on every start?
3. Even after reinstalling the game and making a file-check?
4. What happens if you shut off your antivirus-software while starting the game?

1. I can start the game just fine afterwards.
2. Every single time. I'm completely unable to play the game at all.
3. After "Delete Local Files" and a reinstall, it still crashes. After "Verify Local Files," it still crashes.
4. I use Avast!. If I disable all Avast shields before launching the game, it still crashes.

Every single time, the game crashes after the intro cinematic. It plays to the end (or I interrupt it), then freeze-frames on whatever it was showing last. It stays there for 10-15 seconds and throws that error. It has not let me into the game a single time so far.
I am getting the same results as Malidictus.

Steam downloaded a small (~2MB) patch when I came home from work today. I was hoping this would fix the crash on startup, but it hasn't. I don't know if that patch is a new thing, however.

Can we please get an update on this? I'm a patient man most of the time, but it's still very unpleasant that I purchased a game which doesn't work and hasn't worked since I bought it.
