This is an enjoyable yet highly frustrating game mired by conflicting design decisions and implementation as well as a suspect UI and control scheme that has clearly not been created for PC.
7.0/10 as of 29/4/2015 (14 hours of gameplay)
On the positive side, it's a lot of fun at the basic level and replaying single levels over and over again is very rewarding using different tactics and weapons. Attempting to complete levels using a single trooper or one complete plan is even more engaging and rewarding.
The game fails when you start unlocking further upgrades/weapons/setups and attempt some of the more complicated levels. This is where you need some intricate planning and split-second decisions and reactions count. And this is where the poor UI fails and where the design flaws start to actually matter.
Some of the really annoying issues include:
-inability to sync moves beyond the A B C D go-codes. Frozen Synapse does a WAY better job at that.
-you can't change a trooper's angle of view and swap weapons/reload in the same move. One action will cancel the other so either you have to unpause, execute the 1st action, pause, and queue up the 2nd one, or you have to create a redundant move point in order to queue up your 2nd action. You should be able to queue up 2 such basic actions simultaneously.
-you can't edit or move any waypoints in the middle of a chain. Everything after the point of edit is deleted and on those long complicated levels this is SUCH a waste of time!
-in some levels, the game forces your troopers into very small quarters and trying to select them and order them around becomes a nightmare. There's no SELECT ALL feature so trying to get your troopers onto the 2nd floor is very annoying. Also the way the game selects which troopers are moved between floors seems pure random. I've failed so many missions because I kept switching between floors trying to get everyone in one place and end up being flanked and killed during the time I've wasted.
-I've no idea how this game expects you to play it in real-time mode with such bugs and weird control scheme. Some keyboard hotkeys would be nice.
I'm still recommending it because I've got my fair share of fun for the price I've paid; I got the game on sale for 50%. Until this game becomes more PC friendly, I wouldn't recommend getting it at full price. The ability to mod and create/share your own content is awesome but I really need tight gameplay and proper user-feedback to enjoy this game the way the developers intended me to.
