Do not buy, not worth it

You may think this is the best bf game so far and maybe you're right, but the game is dead. It was great back in 2006, but now we must move forward to the new games. There's no players, the only ones who play it are some clans. Basically they play on 1 team and of course this team is way stronger than team with random players. When you join the server, your chance to join randomers team is 90% because everyone leaves it. Then you spawn and die, because there're a few jets flying around your base, some tanks and snipers and of course no spawn protection, bf2 players call it baser4pe. I'm not joking, the 90% of servers are filled with bots even if server browser shows that there're people on this server and other 10% of servers are filled with pro players and noobs and teams are stacked as ♥♥♥♥. And if you wanna buy it to play forgotten hope or project reality, you're going to be disappointed, because there're not as many servers and the most of them have high ping or players with high ping. I've been playing this game many years ago and it is a great game without any doubt, but now it is barely worth the price, buy it on your own risk.

It was on sale yesterday and I bet it is on sale in origin, this is why the players amount is higher than average and many servers are populated with bots even if server browser or track websites show that there're players, I've mentioned it.

Not that populated, I've tried both mods and there were like 5 servers in PR, 3 of them are unplayable due to high ping.

I bought it today, for 5$ its worth it.
theres 2 normal servers i've found that are high pop(40+) but each are just 24/7 one map servers.
project reality i found 2 high pop servers each with 30ping
downloading FH now.

At least in European servers the situation is not as dire as you describe it. Every night I go to play, I find 3-5 infantry only servers, packed with players. It's not really my thing, but I see them full usually. My personal fav servers are a no-air combat server (Noobs R Us), a server with anti-rape rules (Panda Nation) and another one where everything is allowed (2F4Y) - the three of them with overseeing admins usually on duty.

While it is true that players have in a big part migrated to other titles since 2006, I feel that a lot of the people who stayed in BF2 did it out of being into the kind of teamwork and deep cooperation that the game demands. Those servers that have remained "alive" are all servers where rules, balance and sportmanship are strictly enforced by dedicated admins -which is all too nice.

My opinion is that if you are looking for a Pew-Pew kind of game, just to run around like headless chickens shootin' nice guns and fraggin' everyone, you can probably move onto newer games. What BF2 offers is a kind of game where a team working together can defeat an opposite force of better individual players, fraggin' noobs but less preoccupied with the general view of the battlefield. To date I have not seen another game where that battlefield poetry is possible, reason why I went to back to BF2 after seeing where the franchise had decided to head to, and why BF2 is still kept alive not by numbers, but by the kind of player that would pass on newer shiny graphics and stick to true gameplay and teamwork.

BF2 isn't dead at all, especially when compared to 2142 or BC, which are ironically more recent.

I do agree on one particular point though: while there are a handful of good or very good servers with teamwork, no bots and public teamspeak/ventrilo/mumble, there are many more where it simply bows down to whoever has the best jet and/or chopper pilots (or tanks when no aircrafts are available), due to the absence of squad play, or even basic coordination (the latter is vital to take out armoured targets reliably).

Vanilla Bf2 has a decent amount still, see over a 1000 players on right now so dont know what youre talking about. Also like has been mentioned lots of people are playing with AIX or Reality mod. Game is totally worth it
