Is the Steam version not a standard version?
At first I kept getting booted for punkbuster not being up to date, so I updated it. Now I'm getting booted with messages saying that my version of BF2 is modified. Is the Steam Download not up to date or something?

Punkbuster seems to think that Steam is some sort of mod/hack.
You can reverse this by going to Battlefield 2 Properties > Uncheck "Enable steam community in-game."
On the sidenote, however, this will forfeit your ability to talk to your friends while playing BF2.

That didn't fix the problem. I still get kicked from every server I connect to, typically as soon as I kill anyone, with a message saying punkbuster isn't up to date. I'm glad I bought this game on sale or I'd be rather angry.
