Keys for original retail owners?
So I see that people who have bought on Gamersgate or Desura can activate on Steam. I bought this game directly from Shrapnel, years ago, and would love to add it to my game library on Steam, instead of third party method. Just wondering if this will ever be possible. Not the end of the world if not.. but still would be nice...

There's perhaps a key problem, Steam is requirering some integration by the game, but (logically) Steam is also a shop and can't accept provide tech support and com support to any dev, they need apply a game selection.

I could be wrong but I think that because of this Steam won't be able to fullfil your dream.

I have the feeling that video games require that a more open approach is done. For now Steam push back the threaten of falling in monopoly by allowing other shops sell Steam keys. But it will still lead players to be exposed a lot more to Steam marketing so this can only lead to a Steam monopoly.

The only solution would be an open platform, more or less steam without the shop part. LastFM could give a clue on such approach. It's more complicated because for a full integration where LastFM requires only plugins per music player the user use, LastPlay ;-) would be like require a plugin for each album, ie for each game. Still it seems not that impossible by having some labels games could use like LastPlay Gold Compatible and LastPlay Platinium Compatible.

Indies that is a quite dynamic area curently would be a good oprtunity to initiate the dynamic.

I also own the retail version and would love to integrate it with Steam.

Game looks the same for me, with the same key files and everything. Did you try to just activate game on Steam with your retail key? ;)

Actually I did try my retail key and it got rejected. I decided not to mess with it any further than that. But thank you all for your comments!

Pity then. :( It worth to ask developers what they think about it, I suppose...

Unfortunately only the new keys from Desura and Gamersgate can be used on steam.

Are there any plans to enable people who bought the original game to redeem their keys?

I find this so obsurd. This is from the official Shrapnel store, where just a year or two ago I spent 55 dollars on your game. Now my download is expired, I can't get the game, can't use the key to activate it anywhere... It's really aggravating, man. Love the game, but the developers? I can't say I like you guys and how you do business.

I'm in a similar position (except I can DL my game from the Shrapnel site) and it kind of sucks but I'm sure the devs would give us keys if they could. It's probably quite complicated to give Steam keys to a whole lot of customers from different stores. Hopefully they'll eventually find a way.

Have you tried downloading it recently? I was able to do it when I had to reinstall a few months ago.

The cross-platform problem isn't enough for a single dev to handle. If the dev could he'll give all users keys.
Ps. At year 2006 Steam isn't a big platform as digistal distributor.

Just to clarify where to direct your anger towards: that's a publisher's issue not a developer's issue. The publisher controls distribution not the developer.

Have you tried submitting a support ticket to shrapnel? Does Shrapnel still operate? Or how about to Illwinter (who would be going above and beyond to try and help you?

I don't understand what the issue is. Why can't you just generate complimentary Steam activation codes for customers who have purchased the game directly through the Shrapnel Games site?

Link them to the original purchase. Send everyone an email thanking them for their support over the years and letting them know they can now activate their copy of Dom3 through Steam, and bingo bango instant public relations coup, not to mention a huge spike in activations on Steam which will push the game up the "Popular" list and bring it to the awareness of more paying customers.

I suspect, Shrapnel will be not very eager to give anything to Illwinter, after they stop publishing D3. And they don't want to share their key base too. Just wild guess, of course.

Johan, could it be possible to validate Shrapnel keys on your side? I suppose, you must be able to do that, as game itself able to do so. :) And then you could simply put this key in your base (to prevent abusing it) and generate new one, valid on Steam? (Of course, it's possible only if Shrapnel didn't use it's own keygen and it's own validation routine. In that case it's hopeless :(

It's only a minor inconvenience for me, but I would love to have the game linked to my Steam account.

On the upside, I have fond memories of the game. Seeing it on Steam has convinced me to reinstall it.
