No, man, I'm totally with you. I was over FPS jumping puzzles in 1998. If I wanted to play Mario I'd dust off my Nintendo.
I know exactly what you're talking about with that first part, and, based on that, as soon as I got to the bridge in the first chapter I immediately thought, "Oh, fun, I'm going to spend twenty minutes trying to jump from one 2x4 to another in the dark." Sure enough, there's one spot where the only way around the Ringu lady is to jump at a plank on a tree. Based on the main character's Shaq-like ups (does he bother bending his knees to jump?) I knew I was in for a treat. After falling three times I decided to play something fun.
Sorry, devs, I can live with an old engine, dated graphics, and stuff like that, but making a weakness of the control scheme a key part of the game is just bad design.
