[support] [Avast Antivirus] Game refuses to start/install/update
Hello! I purchased this nice little gem this afternoon and played for a few hours. However, after quitting and coming back to it later in the day, the game now refuses to start; I hit play and nothing happens. I did a verify on the files through Steam, it found one file it needed to re-download, but it was then stuck on the 'download paused' loop and refused to download. I deleted the local files and now Steam flat-out refuses to download the game whatsoever. :( Do you have any ideas? (I should also say that this issue is an absolute first for me in the hundreds of games I own through Steam.) Thanks!!

After restarting, I got the game to download again, but it, yet again, it refuses to start, and refuses to download the file that it deems to be corrupted. :(

=== UPDATE ===
If you are using Avast antivirus, follow these instructions:

Found the problem why it it did not work saw my anti virus spinning away so checked it.
seems Avast was blocking it now I excluded the steam games folder it now works great.
If anyone asks tell them to exclude steam games from virus scans.

=== END UPDATE ===

Two other users mentioned this tonight. I'm guessing a temporary steam hickup. It's almost certainly steam related in some way, anyway.

If you want to make sure, this would be a good test. Try downloading (or deleting then downloading) some other game in your library, and see if it has the same problem.

A steam connectivity issue could cause both problems you ran into. (Not launching, not downloading). The launch may have been blocked if it wanted to download something first (and failed) before launching the game.

(Just read your 2nd post)

Normally you would fix a corrupted file like this:
Steam -> Library -> right click Salvation Prophecy -> Properties -> Local Files tab -> Verify integrity of game cache...

But I think there's a problem with that tonight too, probably related to the download problem. You might just have to wait this one out, or contact steam support.

Thanks for the speedy replies! I'll give it another try in the morning and see if improves. :)

I just found something out from another player (thanks Hawkeye!).
If you are running Avast anti-virus, it's messing with the game.

Here are the instructions Hawkeye provided to work around this.

Found the problem why it it did not work saw my anti virus spinning away so checked it.
seems Avast was blocking it now I excluded the steam games folder it now works great.
If anyone asks tell them to exclude steam games from virus scans.

I have reported the issue to Avast, but I have no idea when or if they will fix it.
Vilesavant Oct 12, 2013 @ 6:12am
Yup Avast is sequestering the OIS.DLL in the Virus chest. Go into the virus chest and restore the file, select overwrite and it'll start working again.

Thanks for the specific instructions, Vilesavant.

I am thinking of buying this game. But is this issue fixed? Can I just play game if I buy it. Without any hassle? I am using Avast..

Hi Lucky 1,
I have reported the issue to Avast, but they haven't responded.

One solution is to exclude the file from Avast scanning, which is pretty simple to do.
Video instructions: http://www.avast.com/en-us/faq.php?article=AVKB107#artTitle
File to exclude: C:\Program Files (x86)\Salvation Prophecy\bin\release\OIS.dll
(The folder might be different if you told Steam to put your steam library somewhere else.)

And if Avast does nuke the file, you can restore it like this:
http://www.avast.com/en-us/faq.php?article=AVKB21#idt_05
This worked for another user - see Vilesavant's post, 3 up from this one.

Ok. Thanks. I have gone through the instructions and it looks simple enough. But just of curiousity.. Why does Avast report this file as a virus or malware? I have been using Avast for a long time, and 99.9% of the time, I get correct reports from the program. But since this game is on Steam I suppose it is safe to run it and that it does not do any harm.

I was hoping the issue with Avast was fixed, but I am happy with your answer and will exclude the file if needed. I will get the game during this sale. I wanted to get it earlier, but with this discounted price I can not resist anymore :)

OIS stands for object oriented input system[en.wikipedia.org]. It's the code library I use to read input from your keyboard, mouse, or joystick. It does the same thing as DirectInput (used by many windows games), except that it works on either windows, linux, or mac.

My guess is that Avast mistakenly thinks it is a key logger or something, because it reads input. No other anti-virus software has a problem with it.

OIS is totally safe. Its code is open source (so anyone can look at exactly what it does), and has been commonly and safely used for years by many projects - particularly those that use the Ogre3D graphics engine (which OIS comes bundled with).

I hope you enjoy the game, Lucky!

I can inform everyone and also you the developer that Avast Antivirus did NOT mark the OIS.DLL file as a virus or malware anymore. I searched the entire directory of the game and nothing was found at all. So good news for everyone that runs Avast! Also I must thank you for the quick reply you gave me. I did not know what OIS was at all. Until now :p

Now to enjoy the game :)
