Been playing Trainz since 2007 (way back to Trainz Railroad Simulator 2006).
As the newest stable release (Trainz: A New Era Community Edition has been giving me grief because my graphics card is obsolete; thanks DirectX 11!), Trainz Simulator 12 has its pros and cons.
*Great route selection
*Nicely modeled locomotives and rolling stock
*The Download Station cleanup has updated old favorites
*The new features are all great
*No compatibility mode like in Trainz Simulator 2010, meaning that if it shows faulty in Content Manager, you can't use it unless you repair it or update to the TS12-compatible version (build 2.9, Trainz Simulator 2009, means the item will work in TS12); this actually stopped me from getting TS12 and staying with TS2010 SP3 until now
*Content Manager still tends to freeze up (but if you ask me, it's not CM if it doesn't freeze up every once in a while; ah, memories)
*Stability issues inherent to Trainz
If you're not into simulators, go play some casual train game like TrainStation on Facebook or TrainPlayer. If you like train simulators, don't go for Train Simulator (formerly RailWorks, nee Rail Simulator). Go for this less graphically-intense, sandbox-like masterpiece of Australian game-making.
