quick questions: thinking of buying.
I understand the core game updates properly now through steam but addons and free DLC are from the developers web site download station.
I can't see what sort of stuff is in the downloads station section of the web site without registering the game (buying it first).
And I guess I would probably need an FCT (I don't object to paying for even the free DLC via an FCT, but paying to update or patch the core game is something else)

any other comments about the game and the third party downloadable content from the site are very welcome.

Yes, if you want to download content from the download station it is good to have a fct, otherwise it is very slow and you have a daily 100mb limit. There is a wealth of different content available on the dls like textures, buildings, fauna, flora, trains, carriages, tracks, lighting, vehicles. routes, sesssions and more. When you first start out with trainz it is very tempting to download heaps of assets :) .
The downloads are done with a utility which comes with trainz called Content Manager. It also does lots of other options, like you can save your routes, archive content for backup, sort content, download directly from dls, etc.
Here is a link to a video clip I made of trainz when I was playing about oneday. Majority of the content is from the dls (including the samba dancer),The animated bystanders are from a Russian site. The train towards the end of the clip is the Blue Comet that I purchased as dlc from simulatorcentral. The screenshots and the other vid of the KA in my library will also give you bit of an idea (I hope) of the type of content available. :)
