Add a key to restart the level!
This would be VERY useful for gold time or 0 death runs. Currently I need to return to the menu and start the level again from there. Or am I missing something?

Already done. Pressing Q (or "Back" on the 360 controller) will restart the level.

I have another request then:
How about making R key have the same effect as Q if the level has no checkpoints?
Isn't it a bit silly that you have to re-play some levels to get 0 deaths just because you used the R key instead of Q for restarting?

We considered that, but then any levels without checkpoints will be automatic 0 death runs. This includes most Pope encounters, Slowdance, I Blame Your Mother, and most Wizard encounters. We're making it easy enough to get 0 death runs by pressing a button to restart the level. Most other games require you to properly exit a level in order to reset the death counter. For now, just press Q instead of R.

I don't get the reasoning behind *not* making the game behave exactly so. The two buttons don't really make sense in those cases (no-checkpoint stages). You say that you made it easy enough to reset with a button, but resetting with another button would be too much? Arbitrarily forcing the player to browse through dire menus just to restart doesn't add challenge other than gnawing on your nerves and patience. I understand the importance of such psychological factors if they're instantiated by in-game elements, such as the scrolling screen and chasing lasers to set the pace. I *don't* understand when a game makes it a point to unnecessarily waste my time and break the flow. If a game really relies on that - even if it *is* very old-school - in creating tension, I think they have some other areas to make advances in regarding game design. In the olden times it was more a matter of certain game-related concepts that we take for granted now, not having been thought through, no norms had been established and a gamer as someone who you'd be making a product for was a very undefined target to design an interface for. Much of the reputation of old games being hard can be attributed to bad interface and game design. That's not something to strive for, it's not a feature, it is lack thereof.
