(I wrote a review before but it's outdated so I deleted it and wrote this one)
Do you like Minecraft? Of course you do, everybody likes Minecraft.
How about spaceships? Do you like them? Of course you do! Everybody likes spaceships.
Now one thing that you can't do to fulfill your spaceship Minecraft fantasies is build spaceships in Minecraft. The very limited amount of mods I have found that even involve space just let you launch a prebuilt ship onto the moon or whatever. Bah, that's boring!
Aaaaaaand that's why this game exists. Space Engineers is a lovely cross between Minecraft and Spaceships. That's like crossing bacon and pizza. The greatest thing in the world and the second greatest thing in the world put together and it tastes amazing.
Now this game alone isn't really all that much to write home about. The real fun in this game lies in the hundreds of user-created mods. All the game does is provide a very basic sandbox environment for you to build your very basic spaceships. If you want your spaceships to not look like a brain-dead hippo, look in the Steam Workshop where users upload the mods they've created. There's tons of mods for anything you can think of, and dozens of users on YouTube upload weekly mod reviews and the like so you can stay on top of the latest mods.
For someone who likes spaceships but strongly dislikes rocket science and thus don't want to play Kerbal Space Program, this game is perfect. Plus, KSP doesn't allow you to create huge fleets with which to obliterate your enemy using the laser cannon that they don't have.
Now, I do have a couple cons that really need to be adressed:
- The camera movement and building is very awkward, or maybe it's just me, but I can't build things in 1st or 3rd person without running into them and turning awkwardly
- The game has you using all the keys on your numpad to try to rotate the block which gets REALLY FREAKING CONFUSING after a while. If you watch one video you'll know what I'm talking about. And the little block in the corner makes it worse.
- I have installed so many mods it takes literally 15 minutes to load up one world. And trust me, you will install a similar number of mods when you play.
- I have a $3500 gaming computer capable of running Skyrim at 120fps. I get 19-20 FPS on this game if I'm lucky.
Overall, I definitely reccomend this game. And while the cons I listed are very pesky at times, I feel the devs are going to fix those sooner or later, right now they are focusing on adding more options, blocks and making the game just generally more stable, and for that I thank them.
8.5/10 and improving.
