A brief message of introduction
Welcome to the Twenty Third Monthly Construction Contest hosted by the UESC! My name is Kilroy and I shall be your host for the month. Some of you may know me from previous contests or from the UESC builder’s hangar. BoredArsonist is taking some time off from administration of the contests. I am honored that they would choose me as their replacement. My philosophy in general is not to impose build requirements for the contests unless it has been something that I have already done myself. This way i know its doable and fair.

This Contest's topic is; "Orbital Cargo Ship"

Keen Sponsorship
*This contest is organized by the UESC community in collaboration with and sponsored by Keen Software House*

TL;DR
The UESC is offering prizes for 1st to 3rd place in our monthly contests.
This months topic is Orbital Cargo Ship.

Deadline:
The contest will end on February 29 23:59 (UTC). You will have four weeks to complete your build. We will not accept any submissions afterwards.

What is this contest about?

The UESC wants to reach out into the community, providing a whole new way to enjoy Space Engineers. So to provide amusement and joy for the Space Engineers community as a whole, we decided to host a competition on a monthly basis with prizes in the form of games.

Every month, with every new contest, there will be a new topic, defining the type of your creation. If you were able to build anything your imagination can offer, then the judges would have a really tough time!

What are the prizes I can win?

The UESC is able to offer prizes in the form of video games, or, in exceptional cases, honorary positions or actions. These video games, which are the main prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place, will be sent to the winners in the form Steam keys or download links.
All the games will come from HumbleBundle[www.humblebundle.com], which means that the winners will get their free games, the money goes to charity and everyone is happy!

This months prizes are sponsored by the UESC and Keen Software House!

  • First Place : Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Chaos Theory
  • Second Place: Rayman® Origins
  • Thrid Place: Assassin’s Creed® Chronicles: China

*Also, Keen is graciously giving the three winners their choice of either Space Engineers or Medieval Engineers in the form of Steam Keys. If you don't have M.E. yet, now's your chance to win a copy. Alternatively, you can win some S.E. Game Codes to give to your friends*

Construction Requirements

This month's topic is all about the task of getting a large grid ship and its valuable cargo safely into orbit then back to the surface so it can be reused. You can do your own research on what one may look like, as long as they follow the requirements below. The ship will have to be able to fly from the surface of an Earth like planet into orbit outside of the planets gravity well, dock with a space station then return to the surface and land SOFTLY.

This will be a vanilla build. Any modded builds will be disqualified.

*NOTICE All entries must be entered as a Blueprint for this contest!*
This is so the judges don't have to load a separate planet for every entry

Requirements

  • Large Grid Only

  • 5000 block limit.(builds that go over will cost you points off your final score)

  • must have a minimum of three crew member cryopods and 3 seats. (there can be more)

  • must have a minimum of 842,000L worth of storage capacity on regular cargo settings. (there can be more)( thats 2 LCC 54 SCC or mixture of small and large containers)

  • must be able to leave planet and enter orbit while carrying 842,000L of cargo. (judges will be testing at 1x cargo capacity, filled with iron ore)

  • must have external cargo connectors to exchange cargo with space station.

  • must have an airtight hangar for one standard size small grid blue KSH mining ship. (can be bigger)( 3x5x3 )

  • crew compartments must be airtight. (Bridge, Cryo Room)

  • must be able to land softly back on the planet’s surface ( simply building your ship out of heavy armor and crashing back at 100 mps will cost you points off your final score)

  • can be armed and armored.

  • can have small rotor merged grids for interior decorations and detailing.(small grids will not count towards build limit)

How will my ship be tested?
Ships will be tested in survival with fuel consumption on a standard easy start earth world. Judges will be testing at 1x cargo capacity, filled with iron ore.

How will I be rated?

You will be rated on an average of three different aspects, for this contest those are: Features, Aesthetics and Maneuverability. Each category is out of 20 points for a total of 60. Missing one of the "must have's" in the above list will penalize you -15 pts from overall score. Final scores will be average from a panel of three anonymous judges. I do not vote. Submitting a ship primarily made on small grid will disqualify you. Overkill can diminish your points, this way you will have to make different design choices. (see comment above about building a solid armor box and letting it crash back to earth)

Can I use mods?

There will be no mods for this contest. All entries must be vanilla. Any entry with modded blocks will be disqualified.

You may use all scripts available on the workshop without undergoing sanctions.

How can I enter this contest?

Everyone can enter the contest, you do not need to be nor become a member of the UESC, even though new members are highly appreciated and always welcome. Simply post your creation as a Blueprint file in the comment section with the following submission form:
Distributor: Creation's Name: Short Description: (Insert Blueprint File Link Here)

DISCLAIMER
Submissions may not be eligible in the following cases which will result in disqualification:
- Submiting a ship built on the small grid
- Posting more than one submission per player
- Not using the submission form given above
- Posting the submission as World
- Using mods (with the exception of scripts)

Because this is a planet build all judging will be done using DX11

As I am a benevolent host and I understand that not all people have computers that can run dx 11 I have some advice on how to construct a ship that will be able to leave a gravity well.

  1. Do the math for your ship. Remember F=MA. Your ship needs to generate enough thrust to overcome its own mass’s acceleration due to gravity. Consult Wikipedia or your handy physics textbook.
  2. Download and use the natural gravity mod and test your ship design in a gravity environment of your own.
    http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=464877997
  3. Download one of the several ships from steam workshop and see their thruster/ mass ratio
  4. If all else fails message me and I’ll see if I can help you on a case by case basis

I wish you all good luck and I look forward to see what awesome creations you guys come up with! If you've any questions or concerns, feel free to ask.

As promised you can vote for contest 25 KSH poll [forum.keenswh.com]

lol crush is being polite. It vanilla this time cause i didnt ahve enough time to vet mods that i would use for this build. contest 25 will return to voting for contests and will have a full mod list

So two large CCs of space. That doesn't sound too hard. Though I can't run plannets, so we'll see how it works out; I don't even know if I'll bother trying. And it has to (more or less) be able to transition from the surface to space and back again with a full load. For those that can run planets, how hard is it to get a fully filled ship off the ground?

Also, I don't suppose you'd have a link to that natural gravity mod, would you? Steam is wonking out with the workshop for me right now. Hopefully if I had a direct link it would work.

lol that was fast. :P

are you saying i should make it harder... say reduce the block limit... First time anyone has asked for a smaller block limit

here is the stright up natural gravity mod tipping pug

the chance of me asking for less blocks is exactly the same as me asking for a vanilla contest.......

I hope KSh figures out a way to stream mods into an opened world soon

To add to this, as a general rule of thumb, you should have at least one large hydrogen thruster per 500,000kg on the ship (including cargo mass). That's a guideline for cheap-ass survival builds anyway. It's enough to land on (and leave) the alien planet, but only barely.

What sort of cargo can we expect? There's quite a difference between transporting 842,000L worth of computers (168,400 kg*), or platinum ingots (~18 million kg*).

* Assuming I didn't botch the math. It's rather late here. Either way, the difference in total mass is huge.

Edit: I not can raed good. Iron ore. Gotcha. In my defence, I did mention it was rather late :)

change in op.

Crew compartments ( bridge, cryopod room ) must be airtight along with the the small ship hangar.

it was pointed out to me that it was silly to have just the hangar be airtight. My fault for not having that be evident in the op.
Hmm, this doesn't sound so hard. Especially after last month's contest.

Actually, I'm almost done with this one. Unless I fail to get a working thrust:weight ratio, but that's just a matter of more engines.

Oh, in case anyone wants to ask, the standard blue KSH mining shuttle that's used as a measure for the minimum hangar size comes out to about 3x5x3 large blocks - low and narrow enough to fly through a 3-block line of airtight hangar doors, and goes 5 blocks inside. That's not particularly large.
