what is best rifle?

it depends on how you play, overall i would say SMLE
I'd say SMLE 1st, Kar98 2nd. Some would put the Kar98 first, a few might argue for the Mousqueton... Some fringe groups prefer the Belgian or American rifles. It varies from person to person, but the SMLE's combination of speed, sights and 10-shot capacity objectively puts it above the rest.
OPfield is bestfield
I prefer the Sht. Le., but it might be worth noting that the Belgian Model 1889 Mauser is the same rifle that was also ordered by the Ottoman Empire for it's troops.
I’d say the Mousqueton is the best rifle. With its extremely fast firing speed and its 3 bullet mag you can sweeps trenches with speed. Some say the SMLE is best because of its huge mag size, but I believe that’s just nonsense since its firing speed is only average and no where near as fast as the French carbines

P.S. If you don’t really want to try and put the work into using the Mousqueton there’s always the other mode with a bigger mag size BUT slower firing speed, the Mousqueton M16. Or if you don’t want to play the Entente, just use the K98 it’s decent of a carbine for the game

I agree with the Mousqueton part but the G98 is actually a better trench sweeper and therefore a better rifle overall. The massive sights on the G98 allow for fast aiming.

I would disagree with the G98 being that good, but I won’t deny it is a good rifle for long range. The G98 is quite difficult to successfully use in trenches. It’s firing speed is quite slow especially for close quarters combat. Now what it is amazing at is long range fighting. It was the most accurate rifle in the game at least pre HoW back in 2015, but I don’t believe the accuracy has been changed much for any of the rifles so I’m still going with it being the most accurate

Depends on your squad (sometimes squad type is more important than getting the "best" gun) and role in that squad. Generally, most rifles that cycle slowly, or have sights that limit peripheral vision are worse than others. Accuracy is pretty much non-existent as far as a statistic among rifles.

IMO, prioritizing ADS peripheral vision over bolt cycling:
British rifles: SMLE>MLE>Ross>P14
US rifles: springfield>m1917
French rifles: RSC17>Mousqueton (both variants)>lebel>berthier
Belgian rifles: k89>g89
German rifles: k98>k88>g98>g88/05

As far as among entente choices by group:
French>british>belgian>US

I would have to give the title of best rifle to the SMLE

Eh, it’s good but it’s not as good as the Mousqueton and it’s faster firing speed and reload

As some already said, there is no "best rifle", the best rifle depends on what suits you the best and the one you get most familiar using.

For me, it used to be the Kar98Az, SMLE and MLE. In that order.

Now if your actually want the know what rifle/carbiner is statistically the best, than that would be the Ross.

I came to this conclusion by using the current weapon stats (found here) and applied a 10 point system to all values I deemed important (10 being the best and 0 being the worst)

The whole list would look like this;
  1. Ross (57p)
  2. Karabiner 98AZ (53p)
  3. SMLE Mk III* and Carabine Mle 1916 (52p)
  4. Mousqueton Mle (both) (50p)
  5. P14 Enfield, Karabiner 88 and Springfield (47p)
  6. Gewehr 88/05 and Fusil Mle 1889 (46p)
  7. M1917 Enfield (45p)
  8. Gewehr 98, Berthier 07/15, MLE and Lebel (43p)

*used reload speed for one stripper clip.

I see these values to be the most important in determining the "best rifle"; sighting-, unsighting-, firing-, bolting-, reloading (1 bullet & 1 mag/clip) -speed and the magazine size.

I left out values like, as a example, how long it takes to open the bolt, as it's irrelevant and doesn't tell you anything if you're looking for the best rifle. A prime example to showcase how useless that value is, when answering this question, is to look at the Berthier. On the Berthier the time it take to open the bolt is the longest, but still the total time it takes to reload a magazine is the shortest of all rifles/carbiners.

En-bloc rifles/carbiner got 0 points for single bullet reload and rifles that couldn't be reloaded with a stripper clip/magazine got 0 points in that category.

I also didn't consider total ammo, as most players rarely, if ever, run out of ammo for rifles/carbiners. Rewarding points for the damage profile and hipfire accuracy would also been tricky, and would probably have required me to do several tests (which I don't want to do in a game I get a headache from).

I left out the Sawn-Off SMLE, Gewehr 98 with the trench mag and other rifles/carbiners that can only be found in Tannenberg.
