Day One: Garry's Incident does not fail because it's a bad game. It fails because it is an incomplete game. Parts of the game work well, and parts of it don't.
The graphics in-game are genuinely beautiful, and I'm honestly surprised I got it to work this well on my computer, the cutscenes are a different story though... In the opening cutscene, Garry clearly dumps his liquor onto his crotch before drinking from it, and his other movements simply look unnatural.
Sound Design: 4\10
Voice Acting: 6\10
Sound Effects: 2\10
The voice acting, while not AAA, professional quality, is adequate. The sounds are adequate as well, when they work. Half the time, it seems that the sound effects simply cut out.
I had absolutely no problems controlling the game, except for the overuse of quick-time events, but I had actually never experienced them before, so I'm not sick of them yet. The combat is set up so that you have two kinds of attacks and one way to block, but you can take out most enemies with the first attack alone, since it stuns them long enough for you to hit them again.
MINOR SPOILER ALERT: The scene where the temple is collapsing around you at the beginning is genuinely awesome.
Here's where the game really has its problems. Bugs are everywhere. Rather than an in depth analysis of them, I'll just tell you my experiences with them.
Dies, loads autosave, falls out of the world, repeat about five times before I manage to shut down the game.
Loads save file, encounters frozen tribe leader, opens inventory, game freezes, weeps silently.
Low on health, uses bandages, ceiling caves in while I'm using them, finishes bandaging myself up, teleports to the sacraficial table without my pistol and magic gauntlet, weeps openly
If you like bad games, or are looking for a joke gift for a friend, this game is perfect. Or if you like survival games and are willing to look beyond what are admittedly huge flaws then you could get some enjoyment out of it.
Overall, if you're looking for the next great survival game, you will be disappointed. But if you've heard how infamous this game is and still want to try it, you will get what you're looking for.
