How do I switch weapons?

I set the keybindings to , and . for previous and next weapon, respectively. Those buttons do nothing. I tried double-clicking the knife in my inventory and it just takes me out of the inventory screen. I currently have the laser-beam gauntlet that you get within the first 15 minutes of the game. Am I supposed to be able to switch weapons yet?
