Ubisoft also has no search engine or anything like that but it's always good to check if a program wants to install stuff like the Ask Tool bar when installing them.

I had a similar issue happen to me when I ran an installation of the game from an old hard drive back when I was running Windows 7. Of course that bit isn't related since I verified the contents of the game and Steam said everything was in check. My guess is Ubisoft never updated the game with a version of Uplay that can be updated to the latest version and is in effect broken unless you either already had an up to date Uplay client installed or download it directly from their website.
