I can't get past 500 gold.
I almost never get past 200 gold and rarely get up to about 350 gold.
How in the hell do you get enough coins to afford anything?

Use the sword to kill things before they hit you.

Get a Job!!!! or kill the low lvl mobs first, Then move to the forest, Then to the top floor, then the dungeon. In that order, without taking any damage if posible. should get 8000gold after all that or more.

Holy hell, 500 gold is low. Clearing out the first part of the castle really isn't that hard. Try to practice dodging.

Pick barbarian. They have huge amounts of health so you will survive longer and get more money. When you are comfortable with the mechanics and know how to dodge etc. you can try other classes.

Practice. Lots of it. Learn your foes' routines too. It will come naturally :)

Watch each of your enemies rather than just rushing at them. Nearly all enemies telegraph attacks in the first play through. Pick your battles. Run from rooms that seem too dangerous, and go for the easiest gold possible. Also, there's an option to make the down button automatically stab downwards/drop from platforms. I found I did a LOT better after I did that little control tweak. Oh, you'll also get a load of tips from your dying family members, so don't feel bad about it! ( At least the members without Caprolalia.)

learn to play...be safe

200g-350g is freakishly low.

Play more, get better. Remember, all opponents let you know what attack they're gonna use before they use it, so it's not hard to avoid them.

Also, once you unlock the spelunker you can see where all of the chests are on the map, always enter a new dungeon with a spelunker first for that reason and rush to the chests (you can avoid a lot of the monsters outright).

Id reccomend using a controller, if you arent. Dont be afraid to skip a crazy, big room with 20 enemies. Run through quickly or turn around and go another way. Try to get to as many chest rooms as you can before you die. You arent trying to 100% clear the castle, youre just farming as much gold as you can. Try to pick tanks, or standard heroes with good HP.

Think about the enemies youre presented with, and the best order in which to kill them. Jump over the slow nights to get the pesky things shooting fireballs or ice. Youll get better in time, it takes a few hours to get the rythmn.

Try to find as many chest rooms as possible. Since you are getting freakishly low gold don't try and attack anything unless you are certain you can kill it. Play more!!! You will get bettter the more you play, i am around lvl 30 yet i get 3k to 4k each run!!

I use a controller. Sometimes I'll start a run that has 8 mobs in the first room alone. Instant death. I'm starting to think I have almost an entirely different game than anyone else.

And when I say I can't get past 500g, I mean that's the MAX I've ever pulled down. Usually it's like 50-150g.

Learn the enemy attack patterns. Most enemies lose all threat once you realize where the safe places to be are. If you go into a bullet hell room, try leaving and coming back. Sometimes the timing will be different than it was when you first entered (A mage that immediately shot at you the first time you came in may not immediately shoot at you on a second visit, etc).

If you're still struggling, save up for a Miner, upgrade to Spelunker, and do some chest runs (avoid fights, go for chests).
