Rediculously Hard
I love spelunky and have beat it many times. I came into this understanding it would be hard and I would have to grind to slowly make progress. However, I have now died over a dozen times, never earning enough gold to buy any upgrades. Minimum is 140 gold for my upgrades and I'm lucky to get 100 per life, that's with destroying everything I can.

I'm not making any progress and it's not getting any easier. What am I doing wrong?

Just get better at the game. You're basically supposed to die in order to progress but you need to make money too.

I too, play spelunky (finally beat Olmec), and this game wasn't all too hard. Yes, the beginning is crushing...and the other areas only get harder. Keep opening chests and don't try to complete a room you're not ready for (unless there are no other paths to take). You'll eventually get some vampirism runes or items of the blood armor set. Then you can regain HP by attacking enemies, making you much more sustainable for the money you need.
Hang in there until then! :) It does take quite a bit of persistence!

Some hp regen would be massively helpful. Unlike spelunky, I can't find a reliable way to kill enemies without taking damage.

You practice untill you get better. Although I found YOGCAST Nilesy's video series on this helpful.

i had alot of trouble early on too, but eventually you just get better. i have been upgrading my knight, and you eventually get a shield which helps alot. all i can really say is hang in there, and eventually you will find chests with like hundreds of coins in them. good luck.

The game is advertised as very hard.
I didn't have too much trouble with it. You just have to be willing to try about a couple times to get 1 upgrade. It will get a little easier after the beggining.

This is a game you can get good at, though.
Just keep trying!

Although you should enjoy the "easy" part while you can....

I actually found speunky too difficult. This one came easy to me though. Weird.

It's inspired by rogue-like games if it wasn't as hard as home-made sin baked in hot sauce it wouldn't do the genre justice. ;)

Some of it boils down to deciding if you even should bother killing enemies. Maybe try just exploring first, hunting down treasure chests. As soon as you enter a room, check the map for chest icons. If there's nothing in the room, then just make your way quickly to the next room trying not to take any hits.

You can also be bold and attempt to explore the first few screens of the other areas (forest, tower, dungeon) before you're actually ready for them, in the hopes of finding an unguarded chest; sometimes it can pay off very well.

Exploring without fighting everything has helped a lot. I also went in expecting to get at least one upgrade per death, which I see is a mistake. Avoiding a lot of the flying mages has helped me live long enough to get some chests. Thanks for the advice guys!

Great to hear that you're doing better :) Eventually you'll have runs where you buy several upgrades in-between to make up for it!
One more thing that MAY also help you, it's really a double-edged sword...is grace runes. Equipping one of those will keep the enemies weaker and scale slower, making it much easier to kill them...but you'll find less gold. By contrast, the curse runes will do the opposite, so using the runes you've found does play to your advantage. Always attempt a Fairy Chest Challenge if you think you can accomplish it, as the runes are THAT helpful (once you buy them) - but be warned, all the other runes go up in price each time you buy one - AKA buy them wisely! :)

Haven't maanged to do any of the fairy chests so far, not even close normally.

Seems like the enemy levels scale with how bad I'm doing. I was on a good streak for a few lives and the enemies were up to lvl 18. then I had 10 horrible deaths ina row in the first couple rooms and they dropped down to lvl 2 again.

What I didn't notice until now and is shooting me in the foot, is every upgrade increases the price of every other upgrade. I thought it was just more levels of that one that went up. So me picking bad upgrades made all the good ones cost too much. I just didn't want to waste gold, so I'd take a bad one if that was all I could afford.

They are all good in the end, and while your knight may not need extra mana, your paladin upgrade for it won't get enough of it (25 MP to block any attack). If you manage to save the gold, the right side of the keep yields the Miner and Spelunker classes, which have horrible attack, hp, mp...etc, but they pick up 130% gold value, and the Spelunker upgrade knows where EVERY chest in the game is...if you're going to avoid everything - that's the way to do it.

I never noticed the enemy-scaling-in-regards-to-awesomeness, but while runes and keep upgrades DO increase in price each buy, the armor does not - so you can always get that if you found some. I think I'll play RL myself now...it's been a while.
