This game came out of nowhere.
It looks good and has some promising gameplay, but I'm going to have to hold off after seeing a console D-pad on the corner. We all know what that means.

This game did appear to come out of nowhere, but it looks really good, and I regularly hate the styles that this is borrowing from but it looks like it hits a sweet spot on everything (letting you play as a hero, building blocks, humor and art, and hopefully a customizable skirmish or something for replay). I wish I could get this on PSN, but if it can run well on my laptop (intel 3000, I think I'll be able to manage if minimum is less) I'll still be happy to get this on steam when it hits. :)

These are just trailers we made for the Xbox 360 version. We figured the time spent remaking all the trailers could be better spent polishing the PC control scheme ;)

Would appreciate both a controller support and keyboard and mouse. Looks like it could be fun to play from the couch as well

Of course (I think it's XInput-based controllers only, though).

Some of the AI/unit capabilities in this video are a little worrying. The guy's soldiers enter the enemy castle around the 3:35 mark and just bounce off it and start on a return path, getting killed by the enemy ballista and troops in the process.

Is this par for the course, are your soldiers all mindless idiots like this? It would be nice if they assisted you with taking down the castle, even if their damage is minimal, a la AI-controlled units in MOBA games.

Only the artillery troops attack the structure of the castle. Other troops fight hand to hand, grab the flag, fight at range, buff, heal, etc.

I see, thanks for the info. So the ground units that do not engage the castle will only attack when they are walking in the direction of the enemy castle, i.e. they won't turn around to engage enemies behind them after bouncing off and starting their return path, is that a correct assessment? It seems like that is the case from the video above.

As a rule, troops only turn around if they hit a castle (or the edge of the map if there's no castle there). There are some exceptions, but those are mostly special cases involving flags.

However, troops travel at different speeds. As such, it's possible for a freshly spawned enemy troop to catch up with one of your troops that's on its return path. In that case, your troop will turn around to fight the enemy troop, but if your troop survives, it will continue on the return path it was on.

Also, troops in CastleStorm are exceptionally honorable, and will only engage in duels. If, for example, you spawn a paladin, and the enemy spawns 3 wolves, only one of those wolves will stop to fight your paladin. The others will run past him, turn around at the end of the path, and eventually meet up with him again. If he's still fighting the first wolf, they'll run past him again. If he killed the first wolf by now then the second wolf will stop to duel him, and the third wolf will run past him, hit the edge of the path, turn around, etc.

Hope that's clear.

tl;dr: A troop that hit the enemy castle and turned around may well encounter more enemy troops on its return path.
