Duke Nukem 1 or 2?
I'm considering buying one of these two but I don't know which one to get. What do you guys think?

To me, Duke 2 is the "better" game. I qualify "better" mostly by "more features, more varied" since, after all, it was released later with better technology and (presumably) better ideas. But Duke 1 has far greater nostalgic value (to me), although this is meaningless since it sounds like you haven't played either game before.

At $2.99 though, you may as well buy both. Or buy the $9.99 pack that also includes Manhattan Project.

I would suggest buying the Duke Nukem Platformer Pack so you get all three Duke Nukem platformers.

Regardless, you should start with the original Duke Nukem. It's both the first game in the series and it's a little easier than its sequel.

I personally prefer Duke Nukem 1 to all the subsequent games. But then I had a program called DukeEdit or something that let you edit levels. I also had about 150 pages printed of what everything did. So I'm kind of extreme in my like of Duke 1.

Also Commander Keen > Duke Nukem. Just saying.

I would say Duke Nukem 2, but the large sprites and small gameplay window makes battle kind of random and annoying. Because of that I think Duke 1 actually plays better.

So... am I the only one who kinda hates 2? I mean, yeah, the graphics are WAY better and the music is better because there is music, but the camera in this game is just horrible and it makes it barely playable.

It depend what type of game style you like between them.

DN1 was my first game ever so it has a lot of nostalgic value for me. I just bought the 1 and 2 and plaed both and while Dn1 has that value for me, it is a very simplistic game, and it feels a bit outdated (come on it is 20 something years old :) ) so it probably wont be that much fun. As for Dn2 I had played it as a kid and bought it as well, as RT said the camera is really too close to the action, making the game a little random and frustating.

Is there any ways to change your weapons on the DN2, or do I get stuck with whatever powerup/gun I get?

Get DN1. Unlike this version of DN2, it's not edited in any way. DN2 on steam has been edited in a couple ways. (Sunglasses dubbed on dukes face for example) and is not the true version of DN2.

i lol'd at the retcon of duke's sunglasses. what else did they change in this version?

The place where Duke's face is on the HUD is a retcon. It used to tell you to press F1 for help in that area or something

It did, and it looked a lot better than the ugly mug in this version.

Agreed. All of the changes in this version make the whole experience feel not genuine.

Sunglasses additions can be edited, there's a guide on steam for that, and it requires 2 minutes of your time. This is maybe not a great addition, but at least they tried to do something for this classic game with what they had (meaning no source-code), not like these ♥♥♥*oles from id Software putting ugly versions at full price of Doom, Wolf 3D and all, right from commercial CDs without even taking care of great source ports out there.

For the original question asked here, Duke 1 is a really old game, but it's damn fun and very enjoyable as the gameplay is really smooth.

Duke 2 is the same game over steroids: more enemies, more levels, more action, more features, but as said above the main problem is that the sprites are really big, making the action quite hard in many places.

I'm playing it on hard and it's ♥♥♥♥ing tough. Duke 1 is really easy compared to do Duke 2. I'd say, get Duke Nukem 2 however, it aged better despite the fact he's far more frustrating for sadly wrong reasons.
